June 14, 2024 - Cape Race, Newfoundland. Story of Titanic hero.

📜 This was the day that the Titanic hit an iceberg off the coast of on her maiden voyage on the cold North Atlantic. It was also the day that James Myrick became a local hero. Read on to find out how ...

April 14, 1912.

Titanic strikes an iceberg!

It was an eerily calm and starry night. The lighthouse illuminated the Marconi wireless station perched high on a cliff at Cape Race, Newfoundland.

Inside the station the Marconi operator, Walter Gray, is instructing his 14 year old apprentice James Myrick.

The Myricks had been local lighthouse keepers in the area for a long while, and Jimmy was learning the new technology to stay on the path of his families lighthouse legacy.

The shy, earnest lad who went by the name of Jimmy, listens attentively as the older man explains that as the most easterly station in North America, they may be the only ones to receive a critical call from one of the many ships crossing the Atlantic.

It is important for him to know his emergency codes-- CQD and the new one, SOS.

When Walter and another operator are drawn away to make an emergency repair, Jimmy is left alone.

As he is reading his code book by the dim lights, across the room the wireless key suddenly comes to life. Jimmy calls out for help but there is no response from his mentors.

He recognizes the SOS.

He runs to the wireless, grabs a piece of paper and desperately tries to decipher the message.

SOS.... CQD... Titanic...We have struck ice....
When he realizes what is happening, he runs outside to call out the alarm and all three gather around the wireless. Walter diligently starts tapping out communication with the Titanic.

On the night of April 14th, 1912, the Cape Race Marconi wireless station became the epicenter of communication during one of the greatest maritime disasters in the 20th century.

At that time Cape Race was one of the most important wireless stations on the North Atlantic seaboard.

In the case of the Titanic disaster, Cape Race brought the news of the ship’s fate to the world.

In the recount above we take a look at what this piece of Newfoundland history would have looked like through the eyes of a 14 year old boy.

The tale of James Myrick is one that may have never been told had circumstances been different.

He had made a promise to his mentors that the truth about them being away from their station on that fateful night would be kept to himself.

It wasn’t until after they had both passed away that he finally let his family know of the secret he held close for all those years. Had Jimmy not been there to receive the distress signal the consequences could have been much more dire for many folks on board.

CQD. SOS. Titanic.

Today, amidst our own set of challenges, we remember those souls that passed away as well as pausing to admire the courage the survivors must have had on that night on the cold North Atlantic.

✨ Cape Race is a National Historic site located on the Southern Avalon. This is a spectacular part of the world here on the that is just waiting to be explored by you.
