Take in a "Live" show...in the comfort of your home with the warmth of vinyl.

Deep catalogue has always been a priority at Fred's.
Gillian Welch's, "Soul Journey" was described by Mojo as ,"It's pretty much perfect".
Aside from the epic title track, Don McLean's "American Pie" contains the beautiful "Vincent" and reflective "Crossroads".
Heart exploded onto the rock scene in the mid 70's drawing comparisons to Led Zeppelin but with two incredible women/sister vocalists. This was the stunning debut.
The Band, "Rock Of Ages" is a testament to their amazing live performances, fleshed out by Allen Toussaint's brilliant horn arrangements and a full side with Bob Dylan in top form.
"Coda" collects some killer unreleased tracks from vintage Led Zep; a must-have for true fans.
Paul Simon's "Hearts And Bones" includes three of his finest moments with the title track, "Train In A Distance" and "Rene And Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War". The master during his peak period.
Brian Eno quit Roxy Music when he realized he was thinking about his laundry during a performance and felt the band was simply lacking in insanity. With delay looping tape experiments and Fripp's original guitar style, the birth of 'ambient' links back to this most unique 1973 album.
CSN&Y: WOW! What a fantastic live treat, double balbum from 1969.
Queen surprised many devoted fans with a change in direction on "The Game" in 1980 adding a nod to rockabilly and disco with their signature flamboyant rock offerings. The album would be their biggest seller in no time.

I posted this from my personal page a few years ago. Feels like a good time to revisit. Cheers.

Recently, in conversation with a media person in Halifax, I was asked to describe the ''vibe" at Fred's. Tacked onto the question, I was asked to give a few examples of the 'weird & wonderful' stuff that goes on at our store. Instantly I thought of moments when a visitor from another province, or another country for that matter would be shopping and excitedly picking up a copy of a NL. band they follow, only to have a member of the group or the individual musician arrive with stock replenishment or just a friendly drop-in. We've had this happen with Alan Doyle, Pamela Morgan, Andrew James O'Brien and Kelly McMichael over the years. On at least one or two occasions, a huge fan of Fortunate Ones would be picking up a cd or record and I would ask them if they'd like to have it signed. They would dart me a quizzical expression and I'd say "Andrew is pitching in a shift out in the other room".
"Do you know how many couples meet for their first date at Fred's?" I've experienced and witnessed this many times over my decades here. And at least two or three times every year between May and October, I get a phone call from someone asking if they can come down to have some of their wedding photos taken in the store.
I dug a little deeper in my throve of memories and told them the story about a gentleman here for an international conference, gleefully striding up to the counter with a copy of The Waterboys cd, "Universal Hall". He had never seen it before and while peeling a business card from his wallet, told me it was his Hall. Sure enough his business card identified him as the artistic director of Universal Hall in Scotland. Then I recollected the time I was having a long conversation with a customer at the check-out about his purchase, a cd by Norwegian saxophonist, Jan Garbarek, one of my favourite recordings of that year. Waiting patiently in line, an elderly gentleman smiled and nodded, seemingly in agreement as I described the beauty of the album. I apologized for keeping him waiting so long and he said, 'that's o.k., he's my neighbor". I laughed, 'the customer who just left?'. "No". he replied. "Jan Garbarek is my across the street neighbor in Norway". This could only happen at an independent record store.
But my favourite slice of the 'weird & wonderful' came via a visit from Winnipeg folk singer/songwriter, Matt Epp. Matt has performed in St. John's on multiple occasions and we had some great chats, post performance over a pint or two. He was dropping off his latest cd at Fred's and gave me a play copy. I put it straight on and wrote up a receipt for him. Then Matt asked if he could sit on the stairs for a few minutes, he wanted to write a letter to someone. So there he sat, big ol' leather cowboy hat, frilly jacket. with a notepad and pen. Meanwhile, a woman walks in and goes to pick up a cd. As she lingers about, I have Matt's new cd playing over the speakers. The woman turns to me and asks what we are listening to and I tell her about Matt and how it just came in. She's really enjoying it and adds it to her purchase, all the while Matt is sitting not two feet behind me on the stairs writing his letter. I asked the customer if she'd like the artist to sign it and step back to reveal Matt, looking every bit the road-weary troubadour on the steps of the staircase. I'm getting a great kick out of this experience as the customer jovially completes her purchase and exclaims, "Wow! I only came in to get the new Emmy Lou Harris. But this is great!". And with that Matt responds, "No kidding. I'm writing a letter to Emmy Lou thanking her for providing backing vocal on one of my tracks". Seriously!! I'm in a twist of laughter as I thank the customer while telling her she has a story for life. Another gem of a Fred's Records moment.
See, that's the kinda stuff that can only happen at an indie record store.
