Wheatland County

Wheatland County Wheatland County is a municipal district located East of Calgary. Covering 4,539 km², more than 8000 people call Wheatland County home.

Twelve of the twenty-four distinct communities in the County are officially recognized as hamlets. The hamlets are overseen by the County while the Villages of Hussar, Standard and Rockyford, and the Town of Strathmore are self-governed. In terms of population, Carseland is the County’s largest hamlet with 568 residents (2011). As the name suggests, Wheatland County’s largest industry is agricultu

re. Beef and grain production make up the largest agricultural activity with many other agri-businesses emerging, such as agri-tourism and seed cleaning. In addition to agriculture, construction and mineral extraction also contribute largely to the local economy. While some communities are growing, Wheatland County is still very much a rural municipality. A land area of 4,539 km² places the County’s population density at just under 2 people per km². Wheatland County is governed by an elected County Council, made up of six councillors and one Reeve. Council provides direction, while the county operations are conducted by a team of employees, led by a Chief Administrative Officer. Together, Council and administration work towards the mission and vision of Wheatland County.

👶 Pedestrian Safety Starts Early: Tips for Parents & Drivers 🚦

It’s never too early to teach your little one about staying safe as a pedestrian. Here’s how you can make a big impact:

👟 Be a Role Model:
Walk with your child often, showing them how to follow pedestrian safety rules. Kids learn best by example!

🚦 Know the Signs:
Teach your child what traffic signals and signs mean, and how to obey them. Knowing when to stop, go, and be cautious is key to staying safe.

🚸 Safe Road Crossing:
Crossing the road can be tricky for children. Always have them cross at crosswalks, corners, or marked railway crossings. Here's what they should do:

Point & Signal: Point across the road to show drivers you’re ready to cross.
Pause & Check: Wait until all vehicles stop and make eye contact with drivers.
Proceed Safely: Keep your arm out and look both ways as you cross.
📵 Stay Alert: Remind your child that crossing the road requires full attention—no texting, music, or distractions!

🚗 For Drivers:

Always follow speed limits, especially in playgrounds and school zones.
Stay vigilant wherever kids are likely to play—be ready to stop at a moment's notice.
Let's work together to keep our kids safe on the streets! 💛

🚸 School Bus Safety Alert: Know the Signals! 🚌

Keeping our kids safe is everyone's responsibility. With schools back in session beginning on September 3rd, here is what you need to know about school bus signals:

🔴 Red Lights = Stop:
When you see red flashing lights on a school bus, you must stop—whether you're approaching the bus or driving behind it. The bus might also extend its stop sign arm. These signals are to ensure students can safely cross the road. Wait until the red lights stop flashing before you proceed.

🟡 Yellow Lights = Prepare to Stop:
Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is getting ready to stop. Slow down and get ready to halt as students will be boarding or getting off the bus.

Let’s keep our streets safe for all! 🚦

08/13/2024

The Government of Alberta is gathering input about renewable energy development on agricultural land.

The pause on renewable energy development was lifted February 29, 2024. The Government committed to advance policy, legislation and regulatory changes to support an “Agriculture First” approach to renewable energy development before the end of 2024.

This means Alberta will no longer permit utility scale renewable energy development on the best agricultural lands, unless crop and/or livestock production can coexist alongside the development. Criteria used to establish agricultural land suitability will minimize risk to Alberta’s privately owned native grasslands and ensure agricultural land (including irrigable and productive agricultural land) remains available to safeguard sustainable food production now and in the future.

This questionnaire is an opportunity to provide input on developing utility scale renewable energy on privately owned agricultural land. Please note, renewable energy development on Crown Land is out of scope for this engagement.

Your input will be used to determine criteria to identify the suitability of agricultural land for renewable energy development. Before completing the questionnaire, watch the 15 minute webinar recordinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jum0KtDw5g to learn more.

The survey will take 15 to 20 minutes to complete and closes August 14, 2024.

Take the survey here: https://your.alberta.ca/renewables/survey_tools/survey

This presentation provides helpful background to stakeholders interested in completing a questionnaire on renewable energy development on agricultural land. ...
