Last week we had our first SDCI Community Pathways field trip – they cared for the plants, grounded in the green house and did a craft at Malyn’s place!

They were thrilled to find out that our mermaids donated over $1250 to their food program and the boys in the body shop matched it for a total of over $2,500!

Pajama Party!!! Yes, we decided that we all needed some comfy pj’s and lots of jingle juice. We played Over The Deep End Jeopardy, decorated gingerbread houses, made tree ornaments and Christmas cards and LAUGHED!!
Nothing better than a little chill time with my pool sistas!!❤️❤️

It’s one of my favorite days of the year; our staff Christmas party🥳🥳. I’d love to tell you all about it, but in keeping with our custom, it’s a surprise for all the instructors. Check in tomorrow for pictures, but not too early. I think I’ll need to sleep it off.😴

Rooting for Wellness!!

It's that time of year when I dust off my pasta jar and ask my mermaids for a little change rolling around in their pockets.

What is it this time, you ask?? Well; I am Rooting for Wellness! (yup; another story -get comfy; its kind of a long one)

Rebecca and Julie (two evening aqua fit instructors here at the pool) casually mentioned to me that their class of special needs students are working on the difference between surviving and thriving and air quality due to plant life. They thought it might pique my interest – me plants? Ya; maybe, a little interested. They also mentioned that the food program that many high school students depend on has suffered severe budget cuts while the price of groceries is higher then ever. Plants and a worthy cause – yep – they had this little Fischtner hook line and sinker!

First the kids had to research what plant would survive in the pool house and present that to me – after a VERY impressive power point presentation I was off to the greenhouses to buy plants (love this part; maybe a little too much). I brought the plants to the school for the kids to transplant into wall hanging pots. This weekend we are installing our version of a "Live Wall" in the pool house for everyone to enjoy.

A visit with Jo and Pauline Slegers from Slegers Living Greens not only gave me great tips and tricks for keeping my living wall alive but they also very generously donated herbs for us to grow in the pool house. These herbs will be on a wall and available all year for our customers to clip as they need!

For the next two weeks I will have re-usable plastic bags to take when a donation (in any amount) is dropped in the pasta jar. That re-usable bag is yours to keep all year to collect your herb clippings to take home in. Clip and cook with fresh herbs all year while your donation will cook and feed the students at SDCI. We also have Malyn's Making Rent Christmas sale for two weeks at the pool – check out the new robes and self care gift packs. Malyn will be donating 10% of her sales to Rooting for Wellness as well!

Of course; I am but one Fischtner in a whole school of Fischtners, the boys will be matching our jar donations (Make Ron Pay!!) We also have Malyn's Making Rent Christmas sale for two weeks at the pool – check out the new robes and self care gift packs. Malyn will be donating 10% of her sales to Rooting for Wellness as well! This is a year long program and the students will have a monthly field trips here (Taxi's paid by 22 Auto Body Ltd) where Malyn and I will spend a couple hours with them caring for the plants, grounding in the grass and doing some crafts in the Funky Bunky. The kids will also be visiting the body shop (and likely put to work) and the year will end with a Time Out.

I am passionate about all the fundraisers I do, but this one really strikes a chord with me. When I visited the classroom to pick up more potted plants, I had a visit with the kids and a first hand look at the food program. This class of 9 incredible, enthusiastic and freaking fun kids prepare lunch 3 days a week for any student that doesn't have one. No questions asked, if you need a lunch – you get a lunch. While I was there, they were making risotto, they had used peas in the risotto and saved the pea pods to use the next day in a stir fry. There is zero waste in this program – I mean ZERO! The kids help plan the menu, they all have their safe food preparation certificates and they not just learn the life skill of cooking, they are ambassadors for the entire school (and in my opinion – our community!) setting the example of generosity through service. I have always said a home-made meal is another way to say I Love You, so please be as generous as you can and tell all the kids that need a lunch that we love them!

This has been a TRUE labour of love for me, but as a side note; my family has strongly discouraged me from talking to Rebecca and Julie about anything ever again!!
