In the early 1960‘s, founder Ted Atkinson worked out of a picker’s cabin on his orchard where he started producing fruit jelly candies for the local Rotary Club fundraiser. He soon turned to commercial production and what began as a fundraising effort blossomed into Summerland Sweets!

Summerland Sweets is dedicated to quality. Only the best tree and vine ripened fruit, picked at the peak of maturity, is harvested with the fruit being processed immediately to capture maximum flavour and colour. From its modest beginnings, Summerland Sweets has grown considerably and now offers much more than jellied candy. A full range of fruit-based products including pancake syrups, gourmet jams,
nut brittles, and many gift packages are available.

Make a stop for a visit of the grounds and one of the best ice cream cones in the valley. The store also carries local pottery, artwork, and gift items in addition to their fruit product items.

Summerland Sweets is open year-round with shorter hours in the winter.

Friends of Summerland Ornamental Gardens

For the gardening enthusiast to lovers of beauty and nature, the Summerland Ornamental Gardens are sure to delight both the eye and the nose.

The gardens are a special place for walks, hikes, picnics, and garden research. Spend an hour or a day as you explore the shade garden on a hot afternoon, picnic under a Kentucky Coffee Tree, or commune with nature in the ThreeB’s (Birds, Bees and Butterflies) area.

Developed as a part of the Dominion Experimental Farm in 1916, the Gardens are an expanse of majestic trees, flowering shrubs and colourful beds of perennial and annual plants. This six-hectare heritage botanical garden is open to the public year-round.

The Gardens are located at 4200 Highway 97 South, up the hill from the Summerland Research and Development Centre. Admission is by a suggested donation of $5 per person.

🚂Kettle Valley Steam Railway 🚂

A must-see attraction in the South Okanagan is the
Kettle Valley Steam Railway. The KVSR showcases
a unique part of Okanagan and British Columbia
history in magical way.

The Kettle Valley Railway was built from 1910-15,
providing access to the pioneer fruit industry into
world markets. It transported families, created
employment, and led to many stories and folklore
that are an important part of Okanagan history.

TAKE A RIDE
Experience an unforgettable ride on the only
preserved section of this historic railway, sure to
be a highlight of your visit to the South Okanagan
and the Summerland region.

The sights and sounds of the restored 1912 steam
locomotive, “3716”, will take you back to a long
past era, complete with lively music and historical
commentary.

TRAIN TRIPS
The 90-minute journey in a vintage passenger
coach or open air car along the 16km route offers
beautiful vistas ranging from lush orchards and
vineyards to a spectacular view of Okanagan Lake;
when the train stops in the middle of the Trout
Creek Trestle 73m/238ft above the canyon floor,
you’ll want to be ready to take many "Instagramworthy"
images.

The GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY is a two-hour journey
that includes a barbeque meal.

wide variety of walking, hiking, and biking paths
to experience.

The Trans-Canada/KVR trail is a must. The
Summerland portion of the trail covers 61 km
between Penticton and Osprey Lake and features
four bridges including the historic Kettle Valley
Railway’s highest, the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge.
Explore Lower Town on the popular Centennial
Trail, with a stop at the Adams Bird Sanctuary just
off Peach Orchard Hill.

If you prefer to take the intensity up a notch,
we’ve got you covered. Summerland has both
marked trails or peaceful, meandering roads with
stunning views of orchards, vineyards, and lakes,
there is something for everyone.

🌼MUSIC IN THE GARDENS🌼

Looking for a wonderful combination of live music, local artists and artisans showcasing their work and a glorious setting among spectacular trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals?

You’ll find it all at the Art and Music in the Summerland Ornamental Gardens event on Sunday, July 21. This is a perfect Sunday outing where you can relax and listen to music, talk with the artists and peruse their works and take in the unmatched setting of the historic gardens. The event takes place from 11 am to 3 pm. Admission is by donation. Bring a picnic lunch to eat in the shade!

Two musicians will be performing. Evan Symons is from Texada Island, BC and will be playing a mix of Rock, Folk, Blues and Country classic covers and a few of his own original songs. He's toured Canada extensively and has 8 albums on his own label.

Barry Valgardson has played the accordion and keyboards for over 35 years. He is playing an electronic accordion these days with 40 different instrument voices in a variety of song styles and genres.

Cleo’s Gelato and Ice Cream truck will be onsite to provide tasty treats!

The Summerland Fire Department is celebrating their 75th anniversary with a community open house next Saturday.

On Saturday, July 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Summerland Emergency Responders will be onsite along with BC Ambulance, RCMP, Voyent Alert, Emergency Support Services Team and FireSmart .

"It is a great opportunity to ask questions and meet those that serve our community! It's your chance to create memories for yourself and your family," the district said in their post.

The free event is for all ages and stages, so the community is invited bring the kids, family, extended family, neighbours or friends. Special appearances will be made from mascots Sparky and Ember.

Major Blasting Complete on Highway 97 Near Summerland

Major blasting to remove unstable material above Highway 97 north of Summerland is complete.

Drivers will have easier travel along the corridor as longer closures of more than 20 minutes will be much less frequent.

More than 46,500 cubic metres of material has been removed from the slope since the rockfall in August 2023. With the end of major blasting, which could only be done during daylight for safety reasons, crews are working 24-hour shifts with a focus on stabilizing the slope with rock bolting. Smaller blasts may still occur.

The progress is also allowing crews to shorten the length of the construction zone and allow four-lane traffic at the south end of the site from Callan Road to Summerland during summer. Two lanes of traffic (one lane in each direction) will continue through the main slide-area work zone. Drivers are asked to use caution and obey the construction zone speed limits and traffic-control personnel.
