And so it began….. Day 1 of our 4 day/3 night trek to the Lost City of the Incas. Our review: The first day of hiking the Inca Trail typically begins at the trailhead near Piskacucho, also known as Kilometer 82. We arrived early in the morning, filled with excitement and anticipation and a little trepidation. At this point we’ve seen a few hikers from other groups drop due to altitude sickness or tummy bugs. After a brief orientation and permit checks, we set off along the Urubamba River. Our group is already a family- thanks to the amazing CEO we had, named Never. If anyone calls me family - they instantly have a part of my heart. We vow that all of us will make it- together! And we instantly feel like everyone means it. We are mostly from the UK and Canada with one lone American. The trail starts relatively gently, weaving through lush valleys and fields of corn and quinoa. As you walk, you can see stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Everyone continues to acclimatize to the altitude with the gentle start. Especially cool were the tara trees with hanging Spanish moss which the locals use as Christmas decorations, cooler still is the white parasite found on prickly cacti. Ever sacrificed this bug to make a vibrant natural dye. Team war paint! (Or maybe it was just me and my face was dyed purple for most of the day). The first major stop is at the Inca ruins of Patallacta, where you can explore ancient terraces and structures. The day’s hike is about 12 kilometers and usually takes around 5 to 7 hours, at Wayllabamba.
