One of my coolest trips! Hiking in the Orkneys, and exploring Skara Brae!

Skara Brae. (Styerrabrae or Skerrabrae).

On the southern shore of the Bay o' Skaill you will find Skara Brae, a Neolithic settlement dating from circa5,000 years ago, it is a collection of eight Thatch and Sod covered Dwellings and additional covered spaces built in clover form around a central passage or main street if you like to call it that with connecting passages leading to the individual homes.
The living spaces come with a very surprisingly high level of home comforts that include beds, dressers and even waterproof tanks for storing fresh seafood (or bait) within the homes. The settlement is thought to have been in use for several centuries and inhabited by between 50 to 100 people at any one time.

Radiocarbon dating undertaken in the 1970s revealed that Skara Brae was in use from the late Neolithic, about 5,200 years ago, and in use for about 600 years until about 4,200 years ago, that would mark the date of the storm.

The site is on Mainland Orkney (Hrossey Island) and is one of six UNESCO World heritage sites to be found in Scotland.

During a storm about 4,200 years ago the surrounding sand dunes were blown up by extremely high winds resulting from a mega storm that hit the area and completely covered the settlement at Skerrabra, this caused the inhabitants to flee from their homes before they were buried alive along with their possessions.

The site had lain buried and forgotten about under the sands of Bay o' Skaill until in the 1850 when the conditions repeated them selves once more. The ensuing winds and rain created a storm of the severest magnitude which hit the same stretch of coastline ripping the turf from the sand and allowing the wind and rain to blast the upper layers of sand from the site revelling the outline of some very ancient stone structures, this exposed the perfectly preserved village outline that lat beneath.

A breeding unit or ‘family’, consisting of 1 pair and 1-5 helpers, forms close ties with 2-5 other ‘families’ within a colony, making a ‘clan’ which vigorously defends feeding territory against other clans.
