Don't give a man a fish, you only feed them for the day. But teach people how to fish and you will feed them forever. Being an avid fly fisherman here in the northwest and abroad in my travels, I have learned many transferable skills and lessons from the fishing world, past business projects and the study of people that I have applied in the business world. One of the biggest skills I have learned is the art of “Match the Hatch”, which is a skill and an art (if you design lures and flies) of which you figure out what the trout are biting on. Once you have figure out the food source, you then tie on a fly that imitates that life form. There is no difference in this skill when it comes to attracting people and building a market share foot print for your business, tribe or movement. In the business world, it is all about attracting people (clients, your tribe, followers and supporters) and you need to figure out what the trends are so you can match the hatch. What I mean by “Match the Hatch”, is to position your business offerings, services and marketing efforts to what people want…not what you think they want. Here are three rules of thumb that I live by, which was an inspiration I had after speaking with one of my mentors and he gave me a question to think about.

“How do you attract people, followers and clients?”

And he gave me three rules of thumb…

3 Rules of Thumb
1. Attract people like how you want to be attracted.
2. Share with people like you want things to be shared with you.
3. Also that being said…please remember that it is not about you and what you want people to know or do, but it is about understanding what people want and then helping them achieve it while add value to people. So to catch a fish you need to think, act and eat like a fish! Be prepared not to be given a fish, but to learn how to fish.
