And here's the finished product! The Minke whale now hangs securely in the Whale Interpretive Centre. It's mouth is open and it is hung on its side as if it is in a lunge feeding roll. Amazing how alive this skeleton looks! Thank you again to the team at Cetacea Contracting!

The Death of Skyla, Daughter of Tilikum and Kalina – Dead at 17

Last year when Tiffany Humphrey and I wrote Orcapedia there were 56 Orcas in captivity. Now there are 55.

Skyla has died at Loro Parque in Tenerife, Spain at the age of 17.

Skyla’s father was Tilikum and her mother was Kalina. Like her mother, Skyla was born at SeaWorld. Skyla was torn away from her mother at the age of 2 and callously transported thousands of miles away to the Canary Islands. Kalina reportedly rammed a steal gate in her prison repeatedly when Skyla was taken away from her, never be seen by her again.

Orcas can live to be a century old and the average lifespan in the wild is between 60 and 70. The average lifespan on an Orca in captivity is 14 years.

Skyla’s death brings the total number of Orcas that have died in captivity to 163.

Orcas are victims of a cruel and lucrative modern-day slave trade and as long as people continue to patronize these horrific facilities, Orcas and other species of dolphins will continue to suffer and to die prematurely.

These are highly intelligent, socially complex, self-aware, thinking, sentient beings. The capture, exhibition and treatment of these magnificent creatures is a shameful stain on all of humanity. There is no justification for this despicable industry, this corporate, greed driven, perverse business of torture and death.

These death facilities are an abomination and an embarrassment to all civilized sensibilities.

Many children when they get older will ask: why did you bring me to see such pain and suffering? What were you thinking? There is nothing educational about visiting a slave prison. Why did you tarnish my very soul and hurt my young heart, and for what? Did you think that watching prisoners forced to humiliate themselves for amusement is something a child should see and experience?

The Orca slave trade must end and the abused prisoners returned to the sea where they belong.

Its World Whale Day and one of the things we’ve been working on lately is analysis of ID photos of killer whales we refer to as “The High Ts”. These are individuals from the West Coast Transient population as well as other genetic populations of Bigg’s killer whales found in western Canada, most of which were not seen frequently enough over the years to include in the last photo-identification catalogue. Some like T346 here have only been documented once, ever! For others below like T256, there are over a decade between sightings and during that time their appearance has changed appreciably. Still, others like T365 only first showed up in recent years and since then have been observed a handful of times both in British Columbia and by our colleagues at the California Killer Whale Project who refer to her as CA126. There are scores, if not hundreds, of High Ts and they are the source of a lot of questions about Bigg’s killer whale population structure that a lot of additional data are needed to effectively answer. Such data will continue to be hard won considering the remote habitat many of these whales live in, but through dedicated studies and partnerships with other organizations, we will continue piecing the puzzle together.
