We’re celebrating the importance of cetaceans in Indigenous cultures today, on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples! 🐋🐬
Humans have been fascinated by whales and dolphins throughout history, telling stories about these majestic creatures as ancestral spirits, guardians, and even deities.
Check out our blog post to see some examples of how cetaceans have been viewed by Indigenous communities around the world!

The new website page features “Larry Roys’ Discovery Expeditions Sea Kayak Trip Services. this is still our orginal site of “orcaseakayaking.com”
Our business has operated under my direction for the past 26 seasons. Our business operators have come and gone but I am in this for the life experience. Our camp is situated on a remote island on the Northeast side of Johnstone Strait adjacent to the Michael Biggs Ecological Reserve at Robson Bight.
We only maintain one basecamp. Our island basecamp was grandfathered into the Qwiquallaaq Boat Bay Conservancy. The Conservancy is an area that is visited regularly by an abundance of marine and land based animals. Notably Orca and Humpback Whales.
You learn a great deal about an area if you can spend 25 years paddling, hiking and cruising the surrounding area. Every summer we have experienced a trend of suttal changes in the weather, marine life and the vegetation. When asked we volunteer for BC Parks, Orcalab, Cetus and most of the sea kayak and whale watching companies that share this wonderful piece of heaven on earth.
We specialize in provided a wilderness experience that we can design from what nature provides from dawn to dusk. Our trips are suitable for novice to immediate paddlers, whether it be solo, couple or family guests. Our learning curve continues but is now more of a refinement of our services.
Since 1986 we have embraced the passion of the wilderness, the wildlife and the humans that cohabitat in the waters of Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound. Often it is our returning guests who rejuvenate the passion of sharing the area with new guests. Our guides share the same passion to enjoy but quietly protect what nature has taken years to mold into a mozaic of wonder.
When folks choose us as an operator to visit the area we feel special. This motivates us to provide the best experience possible on any given day during our time of summer operation. Years of experience have taught us that following our safety guidelines and being kind to nature in the best formula for success.
The format for our multi-day basecamp trips came about after a great number of years of nomadic tripping. Basecamp allows us maximum time to explore, eat fresh meals and sleep in comfortable beds in large tents. It allows us to enjoy support facilities like composting toilets, soaker tubs, showers and a network of trails to walk in the rainforest on your way to bed.
The format for our multi-day nomadic trips and floathouse trips came about through requests from adventures who wanted to paddle and explore the Broughton Archipelago, what lies beyond it. We use our unique land craft boat to support these trips and cover an amazing amount of territory in 3 or 6 days.
If you look around at other companies, we are unique and stand alone as the oldest operator of sea kayaking in the Johnstone Strait and Broughton Archipelago. Hell, we never want this area to change, nor do we want the wildlife to disappear. Your support helps us in turn to support a growing number of people who want to preserve these wildlife setting and work under the guidance of the local aborginal elders and BC Parks. lwr 2019
