Super excited for our guest speaker this year at the Nipigon Ice Fest, J.C. Dubeau! ()
J.C. is a Canmore-based climber who began swinging ice tools in the late 80's. Having spent many years extensively climbing throughout the Thunder Bay region and establishing many cutting edge new routes, J.C. is super excited to come back in person this year and share some stories with everyone about his journey and how he got to where he is today. An ice and mixed climber at heart, he has been known to occasionally swap out the alpine boots and crampons for comp boots. He has a never-ending lust for adventure, and when the ice disappears, he can be found on the crumbly limestone of the Canadian Rockies, developing new rock or dry-tooling routes for others to enjoy.
Come on out to the Nipigon Legion this Saturday for his presentation starting around 7pm EST
Truly, it's not what you do, but who you do it with that makes things feel special π. Flow State - WI4, 35m - FA: Aric Fishman & Deana Renaud - Feb 2, 2025
A fun new route in Dorion located on the same cliffline as the other handful of new climbs I posted about last season. This one is on the far left side of that cliff, and takes about an hour to approach from the road. This route starts with a steep vertical pillar like section for the the first half-ish of the climb, followed by some small vertical humps to nice rest ledges. The top is pretty neat, following some tuffa-like ice runnels up to the final vertical hump for the top out.
Named it 'Flow State' because earlier this season when I went with Deana to climb it, it was flowing hard, so we didn't do it that day. This time we went it was not flowing at all, the outer layer was actually super explosive ice from the cold snap, but had good ice beneath. One needs to 'go with the flow', and keep calm while everything shatters away. All in all a fun line with a beauty view from the top looking straight into Ouimet Canyon.
Thank you Deana for the amazing day, your incredible friendship, and your consistent stoke to always get outside for an adventure ππ€

I love getting people outdoors to try something super cool and completely new to them. I also really love guiding folks who already have experience, and teaching more technical courses to help develop their skills. There's definitely something magical though about taking out people who are experiencing the joy of climbing for their first time, and getting them hooked on the activity! Having the opportunity to show peeps an epic and safe experience outdoor climbing is a true passion of mine. Here's a pic from one of the Beginners Ice Climbing clinics the other day. π€π₯

Icebreakers at K**a Bay in Northwest Ontario is an epic route in a beautiful setting overlooking Lake Superior. This line was first climbed in 1994 and has stood as a long, sustained, super fun testpiece ever since.
Here's a rad image I captured of Adam Dailey making his way up this route on a cold day last week. He has been coming to the Thunder Bay area for decades, traveling from the USA to climb and develop sweet lines throughout the region.
Have you climbed at K**a Bay? If yes, which line has been your favourite route??

I went out today to check up on how the climbs 'Child's Play', 'Chucky's Revenge', 'Nanibijou', and 'Feavers Falls' are shaping up, in case anyone was curious here's some shots. It was nice to see icicles again, so pretty π
I'm planning to go to Orient Bay this weekend to hoooopefully climb something, or at least do a recon mission if things don't look formed up enough yet to climb. I'm optimistic though and hoping for the best haha.

I think that's a wrap for the 2024 rock season! It's been a stellar season, and want to thank everyone who came out for a guided adventure or a course this year ππ€
This past summer Outdoor Skills And Thrills celebrated its 10 year anniversary serving the Thunder Bay region, and I'm feeling very proud of all that's been accomplished over the last decade! I want to give a special thanks to all the friends, family, volunteers, employees, local businesses and organizations, who have helped and supported me over the years to pursue my passion. To name everyone would be a massive list, but you all know who you are, and I thank you with all my heart for helping me to make this dream possible π
My mission has always remained the same: I strive to help grow a larger community of climbers and adventure seekers who are safe, skilled, knowledgeable, and also passionate to share their love for the outdoors with others. I founded Outdoor Skills And Thrills in Thunder Bay as a way to provide people professional courses that teach safe climbing practices while provide exciting adventures in a thrilling and breathtaking environment. I'm also incredibly passionate about giving back to the community, and contributing all that I can to help develop the climbing scene in the region to being a world-class destination for locals and visitors alike. I'm really looking forward to the next phase, I see good things in the future ahead and am very excited for what's to come π
The ice season is now just around the corner, so get ready for an awesome winter everyone!

Here's a little video I put together of the first ascent/first free ascent of this super rad climb at Kama Bay in Northwest Ontario. It was an incredibly cool line to be a part of, and I was stoked to also be able to capture photo and video footage of this achievement. A bold and impressive lead by Adam Dailey on this very thin and steep route that rarely forms. ππ€

When a section of a chimney climb is so tight that it's hard to do full swings with the ice axes or kicks with the feet. This route is called Hell's Chimney, found at Kama Bay, and is a very fun line. Filming this climb was one of the more challenging shoots I did with my drone actually because the chimney was so narrow, it was crazy windy, and there was no GPS signal to help stabilize the drone since it was fully surrounded by rock. Exciting π . Here's a little sneak peek of that footage.

This footage is from a few weeks back, showing Jon Jugenheimer and Adam Dailey climbing 'Ice Breakers ArΓͺte' at Kama Bay. The Thunder Bay region is jam packed with hundreds of glorious winter climbs, and this is just one of them. A true classic in a magical place.

Come along with me as I rappel back down the climb 'Icebreakers' at Kama Bay in Northwest Ontario.
Fun fact, those massive ice umbrellas at the top of the climb are crazy cool features that form that way because the high winds pushing up the cliff don't always allow the water to flow down the climb. Instead the wind keeps the water suspended in place while the super cold temps then make it freeze quickly. With relentless winds they grow larger horizontally outwards until the wind calms down and allows the water to flow/freeze downwards again, creating these cool umbrellas and curtains of ice.

Shere Khan, a proud new sport route developed and climbed by my buddy Dane Latimer ππ€. Sitting directly to the right of The Jungle Book, this super rad face climb goes through a continuous series of small bouldery crimp edges broken up by good horizontal rails with decent rest stances. It's a really cool climb, and a great new addition to The Outbreak Wall, going at 5.12b, 33 meters with 14 bolts. It was awesome getting to watch and film him doing the first free ascent (FFA) this past weekend after seeing him spend so much time developing this line this season. Here's a short film I put together quickly of some clips to share with y'all while I work on a longer version to come soon.
