Very quiet holidays spent with the kids at various times over the last few weeks. Katie returns to BC tonight and Helen left almost a week ago for Alberta. We have some travel plans/timing to start thinking about. Where will we go, what will we do and when will we do it??? It's been a challenging few months for both of us, but it feels like things are re-aligning a bit. I channeled all the feels of the last few months into increasing mobility, learning to breathe, not sweating the small stuff, and clicking away at some balls of Norwegian ($$$$) Marino wool. Knitting, puzzles, walking....very meditative for me!

To avoid the cold we decided to see how far we could get today without going outside! Toronto's PATH route - mostly underground- was fairly extensive when we lived in the city in the 90s. Now it's become a labyrinth, connecting underground shopping and eating areas. Our airbnb is almost at the southern most point. Here's a map of the entire PATH maze.

I left all my knitting supplies in the boat since I only knit during winter. And, of course, we were supposed to be back on the boat quite a while ago. So I caved. I'm trying to keep it to a minimum. Just a set of needles and a bunch of yarn. Any guesses?

This is how close our current airbnb is to the CN tower. This was taken earlier today. Right now we are outside because of a fire alarm. There have been two since we arrived a week ago. After a minute of the alarm we were asked to exit the building. Thank goodness only 7 floors and not the 45 it could have been.

Here's the tiny tree with lights we searched for last December all over the Florida panhandle, to no avail! We ended up streaming one on the chartplotter/raspberries pi on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day in Appalachicola as we prepped for the Gulf crossing. This one started off as Helen's. As the world shut down in March of 2020 she dashed home to BC to wait out the pandemic in her Uncle's in-law suite in North Vancouver. When it became clear she wouldn't be back in Toronto for Christmas that year, we sent her a care package, including this tree. When she finally returned, she brought it back. Then we bought the boat in 2022 and downsized. We took it and stored it in London, Ontario at Chris' brothers home. I thought it would be easy to find one like it for the boat, but we looked everywhere we stopped on the Mississipi and the panhandle. I couldn't even find it on Amazon, although it would have been difficult to arrange delivery even if it was possible to get it there. This last August, I finally got it in my hands again, only to briefly misplace it in Stephen's apartment. Found again! The story of our tiny, $14 Christmas tree! It needs a star! And I must remember to take it with us this time!

Thanks to fellow Canadians who left their boat in Indiantown as well, we have a few photos of Thataway. As expected some green growth has proliferated on the decks. The inside looks good, but I won't post that picture because it's pretty cluttered inside. However, as we suspected, Milton grabbed our canvas bimini and whipped it around. Here you can see it got caught on the mast. We can't see any tears in this photo, even though we know there are some small ones. The stitching connecting the zippers had weakened. We'd known that when we left and that the canvas would likely need to be replaced soon. I'm hoping that it's just zipper failure and we can simply have it re-stitched for the time being. Chris debated pulling the canvas inside before he left in September but he was more concerned about protecting the inside cabin, as the upper deck had some suspicious cracking and he wanted to keep potential water infiltration to a minimum. Sometimes upon weighing options you just have to make the call and live with it. But on the whole we think we are fairly fortunate. Thanks Jim and Cavelle for keeping tabs on our boat!

I love traveling by train! I'm currently headed west to meet my friend Keren. We've known each other since university and always try to get a visit in when we are within 50 kms of each other!

Helen called us so she could see some weather patterns on our premium version of the windy app, halfway around the world in a country where she is undertaking an epic journey. I'm being cryptic because she is very protective of her privacy. But that's not the point of this post. As I was checking the cloud cover in that far away country it occurred to me to check wind in Florida. Why did I not know Windy would track hurricanes? I've been depending on noaa for hurricane tracking. The good news is that despite hurricane Oscar expecting to create severe wave action on the east coast of Florida, we are well protected inland at Indiantown. That's the 15th named storm this year. We are still standing!

Things I've learned about accessibility in Toronto:

1. The TTCs subway and streetcars are 100% accessible, as long as the elevators work. If one is out of service you might have to get back on and go to Scarborough before you can turn around to find an elevator on the other side. Generally I don't mind sight seeing.

2. Most people will give up their seat. Except during rush hour. 50% of tge time I have to ask for a seat. And 100% of the time I insist.

3. If you are disabled you can get your covid booster right now in Toronto. And your flu shot. As I learned today when I went in for Shingles shot #2. I'll know in a few hours if I'll regret having all three at once.

4. The smoothest floors to race down on my knee scooter are Subway station floors and hospital floors. Very little friction means speed, which I've missed. I do have to keep an eye on the edge of the subway platform and slow moving patients using walkers.

5. People will offer to hold my scooter when I transfer from a seat. That's really sweet, but it's scary, since they try to move it closer when I'm in the middle of hopping toward it. Ack!!

6. The streetcar ramps are pretty slick. I have to say that is wonderful. I feel special when everyone has to clear out of the way.

7. Some restaurants have bathrooms in the basement. It's best to phone ahead to see which floor they are on.

8. Very glad the weather stayed so warm. Shorts have been a godsend. No snow has also been much appreciated. The weather has turned, however. If the snow can hold off for a few more weeks I'd be super happy.

Two more weeks until I can start walking again!

We woke up this morning to the news that Hurricane Milton passed over Florida faster than expected. Whatever state Thataway is in, it's now a done deal. Because we aren't there, our need for information is not a priority although we are, of course, hoping that we will know soon. I may call the marina in the hopes that even if staff have not been able to return, that there is a recorded message giving a status update. We also heard that Martin country had a few tornados but we do not know where those landed. We are optimistic that Indiantown fared well and that the boat is safe. Photo of happier cruising days.

3 week follow up today! Time to re-wrap! I have photos of the toes after the stitches were removed. Right now it looks like my 13-year-old nephew took a pen knife to my foot. My family assures me that NOBODY wants to see it, including them, so I won't post any pictures here. I did send a photo to my friend Christie. We were farm girls in our youth, so this stuff doesn't bother us at all! Another 3 weeks and then physio. I think we will start planning our trip home -BC and Alberta- to see Dad and Gail and the rest of our kids and extended family. Today we wait out Hurricane Milton, knowing there is basically f$^&k all we can do for the boat, or for fellow boaters in Florida. The real crunch time for us will be tomorrow around noon when Milton sweeps over/by Martin
County. I recall the stress and anxiety when evacuating from the wildfires in the west so Floridians are very much in my thoughts. A damaged or destroyed boat is a small thing compared to what many will lose in the next 24 hours.
