The Welland Museum celebrates Treaty Recognition Week from November 3-9.

This week honours the importance of Treaties and Treaty relationships. By learning more about our collective Treaty rights and obligations, we can create greater understanding and nurture relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Canadian treaties are not just historical documents; they are living agreements that can guide current and future relationships. They establish a framework for sovereignty, resource sharing, cultural preservation, and self-determination, fostering reconciliation, and mutual respect.

Well, we had to delay the set up of the Museum and Court House poppy displays, but we were able to put up a new one at RiverBrink Art Museum today. We think it looks beautiful on their fence and we thank them for their support!

This notice was printed in the St. Catharines Evening Journal in 1857. Taylor and Bate Brewery was at one time the largest brewery in Canada, operating from 1834 until 1935. For it's first 23 years, however, it was known as "The St. Catharines Brewery" and was owned solely by James Taylor. Eventual partner Thomas Bate had started working at the brewery when he was just 11 years old.

Happy and Happy Halloween!
Today we’re featuring Drummond Hill Cemetery! Did you know that the oldest gravestone in the cemetery is dated 1797?
The first Drummond Hill Presbyterian Church, a log structure located beside the cemetery, was destroyed during the Battle of Lundy’s Lane (July 25, 1814). Considered one of the bloodiest clashes of the War of 1812, the Battle of Lundy’s Lane took place on and around the Drummond Hill Cemetery and Church grounds. In addition to some of the oldest gravestones in the area, the cemetery also houses a War of 1812 battlefield monument and a monument to Laura Secord.
The ghosts of five soldiers dressed in the Royal Scots uniform have been seen limping across the cemetery and disappearing in the distance. An apparition of three battle-weary British soldiers have also been seen moving up Drummond Hill towards the old Lundy House, which was used as rest stop and hospital during the war.
Drummond Hill Cemetery in Niagara Falls was the site of one of the War of 1812's most gruesome skirmishes. Two thousand men perished on the grounds, and their spectres still haunt the cemetery. Some are seen dressed as Red Coats marching into the field or falling where they eventually met their ends.
At the end of one Niagara Ghost Bus Tour, some guests turned back and looked out the window to see the soldiers’ shadows hovering around the headstones. As they told the other passengers what they were seeing, the apparitions vanished.
