Happy ! There was a time when you wouldn't dream of going out in public without a hat. The practice became steadily less popular in the first half of the 20th century, partly due to the inconvenience of wearing hats in cars and on public transit.

Big thanks to our own William Hamilton Merritt (😉) who brought some pizza to the Museum Kids 2024 wrap-up party today. The kids all helped to save Merritt from being erased from the timeline through their adventure program last year and they were thrilled to finally meet him in person!

Subscriptions are available for the 2025 Museum Kids membership! To find out more visit https://www.stcatharines.ca/en/arts-culture-and-events/memberships.aspx

From another angle! Here’s East Main Street in Welland during the winter of 1936, showcasing the snowy charm of our city in the past. Notice the bustling storefronts and timeless signage that once defined the heart of Welland. Can you spot any familiar names?

Sunset from the John Brown House, January 2025.

While the frosty weather makes us bundle up, the crisp blue skies certainly make for a pretty picture.

Share your favourite pictures of winter in Niagara with us in the comments- we want to see them! Bonus if a historic building makes it into the shot too. 😉

Girl Guides made their Canadian debut in 1910 when Mary Malcomson registered a unit here in St. Catharines. Girl Guiding had begun in England the previous year as an offshoot of the Boy Scout Movement.

This photo shows a group of Girl Guides camping out in St. Catharines in 1937.
