: This week's top pick comes from Stephanie, The Welland Museum's Archives & Collections Manager. She chose a photograph of The Welland County Industrial Home, and added that she was drawn to the home's architecture and ivy.

Known locally as the 'poorhouse,' this historic building on First Avenue provided food, shelter, and clothing to those in need. Residents, referred to as 'inmates,' worked the land to sustain the Home's community, and a burial ground was also part of the premises. Architect T.L. Nichols later expanded the building, adding substantial concrete sections for safety. The building was demolished in 1961 and replaced by the Sunset Home for the Aged. Today, the site is home to the Seasons Retirement Community.

: Did you know that before The Main St. Bridge (AKA Bridge 13) was built, the Alexandra Bridge stood in its place as a means to travel over the canal within Welland? Although its time in the limelight could be considered short in contrast with Bridge 13, being built in 1904 and moved in 1926 to make way for the new lift bridge, it spent some time serving Bald and Division streets while constructing the new bridge before being deconstructed by 1930.

Visit The Welland Museum's Canal Gallery to learn more about the fascinating history behind Welland's canal and its bridges!

This is a sketch of the former James Munro Blacksmith Shop which was previously located at 136 Regent Street. It was built in the 1840s along with his saltbox-style home, which is still standing today at 117 Regent Street. Photographs in our collection show the shop became derelict by at least the 1930s and was torn down in the mid 1960s. James was also member of the Mechanics Institute which encouraged the pursuit of scientific knowledge by hosting lectures and developing a local library.
