📍 London, England, United Kingdom - Charming yellow door with Christmas wreath.

Wreaths, a symbol of immortality, have a rich history, being a part of diverse ancient traditions that date back to the earliest civilizations. Their circular shape, representing eternity, has been associated with life, rejuvenation, and renewal. Originally, wreaths were worn around the head, neck, or waist. The Greeks awarded laurel wreaths to their triumphant athletes; in the Persian Empire, they were worn on the head as a symbol of importance, and ancient Romans wore them like crowns.

For Christians, the tradition of making Advent and Christmas wreaths from evergreens symbolizes the everlasting life brought through Jesus Christ. The wreath's circular shape, representing God with no beginning and no end, is a universal symbol. Hanging a wreath on a door or a wall is not just a tradition but a cherished part of Yuletide decorations, adding warmth and joy to the festive season, almost as essential as setting up a Christmas tree.

Part 2/2

December 13 is celebrated as Saint Lucia Day, especially in Sweden and Scandinavia. After the official ceremony, everyone gathers for a festive lunch featuring an S-shaped saffron bun (Lussekatt or Lussekatter) as the highlight.

These saffron-scented buns are cherished throughout Sweden and the wider Scandinavian region. The celebration on December 13 honours Saint Lucia, a martyr from the third century, and coincides with the winter solstice.

Try making these traditional raisin-filled buns to fill your kitchen with the delightful aroma of a Swedish Christmas. While they are typically enjoyed on Saint Lucia Day, they are delicious year-round.

We've included a recipe card in the comments below.

Part 1/2

Sweden celebrates St. Lucia's Day on December 13th, honouring Saint Lucia, an early Christian martyr known for her devotion to helping the poor.

A chosen "Lucia" leads a procession called the "Lucia tåg," wearing a white gown, a red belt, and a crown of candles. The procession includes handmaidens and star boys who sing "Sankta Lucia." The festivities conclude with a lunch featuring Lussekatt, a traditional S-shaped saffron bun (see part 2).

This holiday focuses on spreading light and positivity during the darkest time of the year, sharing joy with those around you.

Cluj-Napoca, located in northwestern Romania, is the Transylvania region's unofficial capital. It is the second most populous city in Romania.

As Christmas approaches in Romania, a special magic fills the air. This holiday, along with Easter, is one of the country's most cherished religious celebrations, with 85.3% of the population identifying as Romanian Orthodox Christians. Christmas is a time for family gatherings, love, respect, and gift-giving. This vibrant holiday is especially appealing to children, who eagerly await the arrival of Moș Crăciun (Santa Claus) to receive their gifts. Undoubtedly, the most beloved Romanian Christmas tradition is carolling. With roots tracing back to the 4th century in Rome, Romanian Christmas carols are among the oldest in the world.

During Hanukkah in Sweden, Jewish families place a menorah in their windows to symbolize their freedom to practice their faith without fear of persecution.

For the general population, a candle or lamp in the window represents friendship and a warm welcome to visitors. Throughout the holiday season in Stockholm, windows are adorned with Advent candles, Christmas stars, and lit menorahs.

Candles have historically played a crucial role in Sweden, where the population is sparse and winters are long. With the sun setting as early as 3 PM, the warm glow of candles served as a guiding light, signalling to others, "We are here." In the darkness, its light can be seen from kilometres away.

Fried foods, such as donuts and potato latkes (or potato pancakes), are traditionally served by Jewish people during Hanukkah to commemorate the miracle of the oil that kept a lamp burning in a Jerusalem temple for eight days despite expectations that it would last only one day. Doughnuts, in particular, are a fun way to celebrate this holiday. Sufganiyot, or filled doughnuts, originated in Europe and were brought to Israel by Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century.
