I TOUCHED A WHALE in Baja California Sur – one of the best places in the world to encounter gray whales and especially to see mothers with their calves.

Set out in small boat pangas with expert local guides who know where to go for that up close encounter. Kayak among mangrove forests, hike desert islands with sculpted sand dunes and keep your eyes out for diving pelicans, osprey and magnificent frigatebirds. Whale watching is at its best January – March. Contact me to get you UP CLOSE to this magical experience!

A tiny piece of Iceland -Vigur Island with its HUGE presence was the grand finale to my travels with Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic. Only 2 km long and 400 metres wide, population 3 and is owned by the famous Polar explorer Felicity Aston with husband and son. Home to 100,000 puffins, nesting Arctic terns and 7000 eider ducks. The economic mainstay on the island is the collection of eider down from the nesting ducks – quite the labour-intensive harvesting and cleaning operation! The island has to its fame Iceland’s only windmill and Iceland’s oldest boat. What a treat- ‘happy marriage cake’ thanks to the plentiful rhubarb crop! But the icing on the cake was to see Lindblad Expeditions supporting 'The Puffin Boardwalk Project' by delivering wood off the ship for the construction of the boardwalk. This is 100% why I love travelling with this company!

Fear of heights? Not me! I was completely distracted seeing puffins up close in North Iceland with Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic. It was so worth the climb clinging to ropes, chains and a ladder getting to the top for incredible views of steep sea cliffs shrouded in mist and did I mention puffins? Floated down the Jokulsa glacier river canyon with views of sheep, waterfalls and a stop for hot chocolate from a geothermal spring. Hiked a 4000 year old lava field, walked through fin whale jaw bone gate into an award winning botanical garden in the middle of nowhere and explored the town of Flateyri, famous for the Iceland’s oldest store and one of the 150 bookshops ‘you must see before you die’ as well as beautiful paintings of birds on the buildings throughout town. It is nonstop adventure off the ship and entertaining educational talks on board – from iphone photography, learning the Icelandic alphabet, hearing about violent Viking sagas, having the undersea specialists capture on video the sea life under the ship to climate change and if technology can fix it. Exploring and learning is living!

A gangplank welcome by Tarzan look alike Captain Peik before settling into shipboard life on the National Geographic Explorer, travelling with Lindblad Expeditions. Love my well-designed cabin with large ensuite, storage for everything and a complimentary jacket waiting for me. Getting my bearings - the dining room with excellent service and beautifully presented food using locally sourced ingredients - the 24/7 open bridge (on every Lindblad expedition) for the best seat in the house to learn about navigation while looking out for sea life - the lounge for ‘recap’ (a Lindblad tradition) happy hour with a twist of education from the expedition team of naturalists, geologists, cultural experts, historian, underwater specialists, wellness specialist, Nat Geo certified photo instructor and joining us, the very entertaining award winning Nat Geo photographer Paolo Verzone. In great company and ready to explore!

Hanging out in the beautiful city of Reykjavik before joining Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic on the Wild Iceland Escape. So excited to find the massive and impressive topographical map called the "Iceland Replica" in the lobby of Reykjavik City Hall. Took in the stunning Harpa Concert Hall on the waterfront- an incredible glass structure of reflecting light while enjoying a cocktail at the bar. Not to be missed, the Perlan - a huge rotating glass dome and interactive nature museum resting on 6 water tanks holding much of Reykjavik's hot water supply. Full of incredible movies, exhibits on volcanos, an ice cave and the most mind-blowing planetarium video on the Aurora Borealis that you will ever see!
