Italy waved goodbye yesterday to its flagship airline Alitalia after 74 years in business.
"Thank you for having accompanied us for 74 years". Here is the latest Alitalia announcement after 74 years of history. Laura Manto, airline stewardess serving in Fiumicino, made a moving announcement over the microphone, just before boarding the last AZ 1581 flight to Cagliari yesterday.
Truth be told it is a bittersweet sentiment for me. There’s no argument there were many areas of improvement, though some great memories still remain.
I remember my first flight ever in TOP class for my first trip to Sicily, at that time Alitalia (in the early ‘80’s) had business class on another level- much like a double decker bus, business class travellers were led up via round staircase to stretch-out,
bed-like comfy leather chairs.
In the 90’s I remember the gorgeous flight attendants wearing Armani designer uniforms, and in the early 2000’s I had the pleasure of flying with the AC Milan team and was able to exchange Nintendo games with them. Overall I’ll remember eating airplane food that wasn’t only edible but was actually pretty good, getting goodie bags that I have kept until today and that I still use on my journeys (which were once filled with Laura Biagiotti goodies) and of course the not so comfortable, but practical socks. I will also remember falling asleep with some good wine and waking up to the smell of real Moka espresso. My most recent memory though is of my daughters first flight, at only 6 months, where the crew was so amazingly good that one of them offered to hold her during dinner service so I could eat. Glad we had those times, and now we’ll look back on the pictures with fondness.
It’s been over 30 years of me traveling with @Alitalia and it is time to say goodbye, but the good memories remain.
Grazie e arrivederci!
