DELICIOSO VINHO šŸ·
(Portugal 2 Holiday)

How can we possibly come to Portugal and not sample their delicious wines?

Well thatā€™s exactly what we did enroute to Lagos today, as we enjoyed a delicious lunch, with Vinho of course, at Herdade dos Grous.

This winery sits in the heart of the Alentejo region. Surrounded by 1100 hectares of olive groves, cork forests and vineyards, we enjoyed a superb lunch accompanied by their award-winning wines, of course!

It is currently a very quiet bus ride over to Lagosā€¦LOL! šŸ˜“šŸ˜“

UNFORGETTABLE
(Portugal 1 Holiday)

We couldnā€™t wait for the hike today. We were promised unforgettable scenery and we got unforgettable scenery!

Formed over millions of years, the cliffs along this coast dominate the Algarveā€™s landscape with caves, grottoes, secluded beaches and huge sink holes providing some of the most spectacular scenery around. It took us over an hour to walk a short distance because we kept stopping to take pictures and to watch the huge waves come crashing in!

As today was our last day together, we celebrated by enjoying a long leisurely lunch at Casa Lamy at Benagil Beach, complete with fish, seafood, sangria and multiple desserts!

Our plans were to continue hiking after lunch, but thunderstorms cut our afternoon short though we sure made the best of the day we were given!

THE WONDERS OF SINTRA
(Portugal Holiday 2)

What better way to enjoy the many beautiful sights of the famed town of Sintra than with a best buddy of 55 years(!) and his lovely wife.

Meandering around the little streets around town always brought about another terrific photo-op, impressive view or a delicious pastry!

We now turn our attention to the adventure that awaits us in the Algarve!

THE WIND AND THE WONDERFUL
(Portugal 1 Holiday)

A severe weather alert yesterday had us worried that we may have had to cancel our hike today, but we worried for nothing - we had a GREAT day!

Granted it was windy (not cold, just windy), but in fairness, itā€™s always windy at Cabo Sao Vicente. It was once considered the ā€œend of the worldā€ and the last piece of land sailors saw before setting out to sea.

And it was spectacularly beautiful. The windswept landscape harboured hundreds of wildflowers and the sea cliffs & whitecaps made for the perfect backdrop to our photos.

We loved every step!

ā€œAā€ FOR EFFORT!
(Portugal 2 Holiday)

Itā€™s not like we didnā€™t try. Everyone hopped on our bus this morning, for the journey out to the famed Cabo da Roca lighthouse - the western-most point in Europe.

But as soon as we stepped off the bus - whoosh! Gale force winds and rain hit us pretty hard.

But you know what? many guests still stayed out to take photos & explore the sights. This is one tough group! šŸ’Ŗ

We decided that the afternoon was the perfect time to explore some of the many Cascais museums.

Note: A big thank you to hikers Bruce & Marilen, who shared their photos for this post.

THE POWER OF FADO
(Portugal 2 holiday)

As a special treat, our program includes an evening of Fado music in Lisbon.

Although the origins are difficult to trace, today fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain traditional structure. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sense of resignation, fate and melancholy.

Our dinner & show provided us not only with a delicious meal, but a glimpse into the musical soul of Portugal!

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH
(Portugal Holiday 2)

We got all decked out in green for St.Patrickā€™s Day, all excited about our hike.

The morning went fine. But then Mother Nature mistakenly thought we were in Ireland and gave us a good little soaking.

Fortunately our group of hikers were great sports and made the best of it. We may have been wet but we sure looked good in green!

WET BUT WORTH IT
(Portugal 1 Holiday)

The day started off promising enough; we had sunshine and cinnamon buns, and a whole day of hiking ahead of us. We hiked along the cliff tops with really gorgeous views of the sea and coastal villages.

Raindrops started around lunchtime but that didnā€™t deter us. We mustered on, determined to see the famous rock formations that the Algarve is famous for. THAT was worth it!!!

And even though our hike was dampened by the rain, we are a great bunch and enjoyed ourselves regardless. We even went for ice cream afterwards.

A LITTLE LESS INHOSPITABLE!
(Portugal 2 holiday)

Whereas our first group last week started off with some rather foul weather, our 2nd group fared considerably better.

The bright sunshine provided sweeping views of the coastline as we hiked our way down to the main road. This loop hike has us passing the famed Quincho Beach (a surfing hotspot) as we strolled all the way back to our hotel. We even had a little time for an ice cream stop along the way!

A most promising start to our holiday.

WINED & DINED
(Portugal 1 Holiday)

We are on the move!

Weā€™ve left Cascais behind and are heading south to the Algarveā€¦ but with a special detour along the way. Portuguese wines are famous worldwide so itā€™s only fitting that we stop at a winery!

Herdade dos Grous sits in the heart of the Alentejo region. Surrounded by 1100 hectares of olive groves, cork forests and vineyards, we enjoyed a superb lunch accompanied by their award-winning wines, of course!

(Portugal 2 holiday)

Our 2nd Portugal group has arrived in Cascais and they are eager to get things started - after a good nightā€™s sleep of course!

SITES OF SINTRA
(Portugal 1 Holiday)

We knew it was gonna be a good day when we awoke to glorious sunshine.

Today was all about visiting some of the fascinating sites in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

Our day began at the Santuario da Peninha, located high atop a rocky outcrop with spectacular views over the entire Sintra coastline. It was so very cool to get a birdā€™s eye view of the trails we had hiked all these previous days.

From here, we followed dirt tracks to the Convento dos Capuchos (or Cork Convent), where we had to take a vow of silence šŸ¤« just as did the friars over 500 years ago. Just kidding! Can you imagine!

Forested trails then led to the opulent and grand Monserrate Palace, boasting exotic gardens, a waterfall and, of course, an elegant and stately palace.

We finished things off with a little sightseeing & retail therapy in historic Sintra and it was truly perfection!

WE CAN SEE CANADA!
(Portugal 1 Holiday)

Todayā€™s hike started at the western most point of continental Europe - Cabo da Roca, with its sweeping views across the Atlantic. Legend has it that if you stand on your tiptoes you can see Newfoundland šŸ˜‰

After some spectacular photo ops, we hiked along wide country roads meandering the hillsides as we worked our way down to the beach. We ate our lunches sitting on the sand and listening to the waves come crashing in. No wonder Praia da Adraga is one of the most photographed beaches in Portugal!

After lunch, the hike resumed along the cliff tops, with the Cabo da Roca lighthouse and Praia da Adraga almost always in view.

A nice cold one in a traditional Portuguese village pub capped off the day quite nicely!

CASCAIS
(Portugal 1 Holiday)

What a lovely little resort town to call homeā€¦ and weā€™re not the only ones who think so. In the 19th century, King Luis I chose it as his royal summer retreat, and it has been a holiday destination ever since.

It may still be a little too cold to enjoy the beaches here, but thereā€™s lots more to see and do, including almost a dozen museums (all free to us!), a fort, the marina, shops and restaurants galore and of course, one of the oldest and best ice cream parlours in Portugal!

WOOF! WOOF!
(Portugal holiday 1)

Mother Nature made up for her mistake yesterday, serving up a perfect forecast for our Hike of the Barking Dogs! Why is it called the Hike of the Barking Dogs, you ask? So named because, you guessed it, there are a lot of barking dogs en route! Itā€™s only natural for a trail that explores rural parts and farmland.

That wasnā€™t our only entertainment this morning though. A newly built fence trapped up (momentarily) on the wrong side of the trail, but your enterprising hike leaders managed to find escape routes šŸ˜œ

The afternoon was much more serene. No barking dogs and no unforeseen obstacles - just wide forested trails which we had exclusively to ourselves.

A fine day all around.

OH THE DRAMA!
(Portgual 1 Holiday)

The first hike of our program is the aptly named ā€œInhospitable Coastā€ - the crashing waves and imposing fortresses make for an intimidating welcome to all who wished to conquer the coast.

Fortunately for us, we got the chance to view its magnificence from afar. Though Mother Nature was herself not so hospitable, pelting us with driving wind and rain in the morning. It did make for some very dramatic scenery though, and we could easily see why no battleships would ever have been able to come ashore.

Feeling a little beaten by the weather, we called it a day around lunchtime, only to spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying blue skies and sunshine from the comfort of our hotel rooms šŸ˜œ šŸ˜†
