CALLING ALL MURDER MYSTERY FANS…(Galapagos holiday)

One rather intriguing piece of history that awaits our group once they sail to the island of Floreana, is the tale of a bizarre real life murder(?) mystery back in the 1930’s famously knows as “The Galapagos Affair”.

To keep it short - On 27th March 1934, the Galapagos Baroness and her lover Phillipson (see photo) completely disappeared without trace. According to Floreana resident Margaret Wittmer, the couple had set sail on a passing ship towards Tahiti, however, no such ship was ever recorded as having reached Galapagos shores. Other accounts are quite different, as they claim to have heard a long unmistakable scream, and then silence before the disappearance, and remembers no ships passing in the night. To this day no one knows of their fate except that the Baroness' belongings were found in her residence, but no traces of them. The plot is actually far more complicated and bizarre, so do Google it further!

This mystery remains unsolved to this day, so the game is afoot for our adventurers!

THEY ARE EVERYWHERE - SEA LIONS THAT IS (Galapagos holiday)

November is the end of pupping season for the sea lions so there are lots of little ones around. The little ones are especially curious and they often come close for a good look and a sniff.

There are more sea lions in the south east and they are on every beach, every pier, every coastline, every walk, under water and above.

The alfa male patrols the beach barking to dissuade the bachelors from coming to his harem. It is not unusual to see a big fight break out when a bachelor comes too close. We can hear him from afar and know to make a wide berth so as not to get in the way.

The sea lions have been a constant source of entertainment, we could watch them for hours.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BIRDS (Galapagos holiday)

We have been lucky over the last days to trek through islands hosting the 3 kinds of bo***es and the Albatross. We were intrigued to watch the 8 steps of the Albatross mating dance where they bob, weave and sword fight with their beaks. We could have spent hours taking in this display.

BUT…. we had more to see. Next on our list were the bo***es. We saw the Blue-footed b***y, the Nazca b***y, the Red-footed b***y and the slippered bo***es. Amazing birds.

It is the natural world at its finest.

3 FASCINATING FACTS (Galapagos holiday)

The Galapagos Islands are truly one of Mother Nature’s gems, but did you know that they are as fascinating as they are beautiful? Here are 3 things most people don’t know about this unique destination:

The Galápagos Archipelago is one the most volcanically active areas in the world. Situated atop a hotspot in the western Pacific, the islands were created over millennia of volcanic activity, as magma repeatedly broke through the sea floor and formed layer upon layer of rock, eventually becoming islands. Today, there are 13 active volcanoes in the archipelago with intermittent eruptions occurring as recently as 2018.

An astonishing 97 percent of the Galápagos landmass is designated a national park. Established in 1959, Galápagos National Park protects more than 3,000 square miles of islands and islets, while the Galápagos Marine Reserve protects an additional 50,000 square miles of ocean around the islands.

Unobscured by light pollution, the night skies over the Galápagos are some of the most dazzling on the planet. With its unique position straddling the Equator, the archipelago also offers a rare opportunity to view the constellations of the both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres at the same time.

A TOUR OF THE SAMBA! (Galapagos holiday)

While Sheila and her group are enjoying a cruise around the various islands – and out of wifi range – we thought we would entertain you with a few tidbits about our adventure and what makes it so special. First up, is the boat itself – The Samba. Not only is it staffed by an excellent crew and great guide, but we have the boat all to ourselves. Our very own private Comfortable Hiking Holidays tour.

But what does the boat look like? Well, we found an excellent video, as the young lady provides a very good overview of the boat, its features and even some of the crew. Have a look and see what makes it so special!

CHARLES DARWIN & THE GALAPAGOS
(Galapagos holiday)

Perhaps the most famous early visitor to the Islands was Charles Darwin, a young naturalist who spent 19 days studying the islands' flora and fauna in 1835. In 1859, Darwin published On the Origin of Species, which introduced his theory of evolution — and the Galápagos Islands — to the world.

Yesterday, we got a chance to visit the world famous Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. It is a biological research station and active breeding center operated by the Charles Darwin Foundation. More than 200 scientists and volunteers are involved with research and conservation efforts, the most well-known of which involves a captive breeding program for giant tortoises - check out the photo of the two tortoises having a turf war 🐢

This trip is both an adventure AND an education!

Adiós Quito – Hola Galapagos Islands! (Galapagos Holiday)

Yesterday we bid farewell to Quito and embarked on our Galápagos Islands adventure in earnest.

Our first port of call was El Chato, a Santa Cruz nature reserve where Galapagos giant tortoises roam free. Watching these massive creatures lounge in mud ponds and snack on fresh greens was just amazing! And let's be real, they're huge - we're talking 5 feet long and 250 kilos huge!

The reserve also features an impressive lava cave, complete with illuminated tunnels that offer a glimpse into the island's volcanic history.

We capped off the night with a sushi dinner that blended Ecuadorian and Japanese flavours. Headed to bed happily tired.

GALAPAGOS ADVENTURE HAS BEGUN!

The city of Quito, meaning "middle of the world," is fondly regarded as the "Belly Button of the world." Our Galapagos adventure began with a visit to the iconic Virgin of Panecillo, the world's tallest aluminum statue, showcasing a winged Virgin Mary visible throughout Quito. We strolled through the historic city, visiting celebrated churches, including the Franciscan church, housing the Americas' pioneering brewery, followed by a flavorful Ecuadorian lunch.

A short drive led us to the equator, marking the convergence of hemispheres, confirmed by our GPS reading of 00°00'00" latitude. Aligning with CHH customs, we discovered a quaint ice cream shop offering shaved ice with local fruits, a cherished treat.

NO. 75

Ask a guest who has already been on our Provence & Cote d’Azur holiday what this number means to them and you will likely get the following reply: “a delicious and memorable dinner!”.

That’s because it happens to be the name of a very special restaurant we dine at in Avignon. Not only is the meal a treat, but the building and dining area has much significance in this historic town. That’s because this charming mansion is where Jules François Pernod invented a new liqueur using absinthe back in 1870!

When you come dine with us here, we encourage you to take a good look around the mansion and soak in its architectural beauty.

IT’S A MOVING TARGET

We often get asked “when’s the best time to book my flight for my CHH trip?”. The answer is, there is no right answer 🤨.

That’s because the airlines continuously change their pricing and scheduling depending on multiple factors. In fact, in one famous example, a fare for a flight from Miami to L.A. changed 135 times in 300 days! But why? Well airlines will generally offer at least 10 or 15 different prices on every flight that they operate, and these fares change because airlines purposefully raise or lower them, or start or end fare sales.

Additionally, various fare categories are constantly becoming sold out or getting re-opened as other travelers buy or cancel seats. So what’s the best strategy? As soon as we provide the meeting times for our trip, contact us so that we can help you book your preferred flights.

DARN RIGHT THEY’RE TOUGH!

Looking to upgrade your hiking socks? Then let us introduce you to a brand from Vermont called Darn Tough. They specialize in hiking socks and they are “darn” good at it! They are comfortable, durable and offer excellent protection and come in various models and colours. Mind you, they are quite pricey, but they definitely live up to their reputation. In fact, Maddalena swears by Darn Tough and will only wear the brand when it comes to hiking.

She turned me on to them as well, and I now too sing their praises!

You can find them at most outdoor stores (MEC, Sail, etc…). So do your feet a favour and check them out!

A WORTHY EXTENSION!

More and more of our guests are choosing to extend their holidays with us, and we think it’s a great idea! Since you are already there, why not spend a few extra days in fabulous Paris or Rome, or perhaps one of the gorgeous Greek Islands?

For those of you planning on joining us in Ireland, one extension we highly recommend is Belfast. Not only is it easy to get to – a direct 2hr train ride from Dublin, but it offers a wide variety of activités and sights, that can be enjoyed over the course of a long weekend. I (Robert) did just that a few years back, and it was wonderful – my highlights included the stunning Titanic Museum, an IRA guided walking tour (fascinating), a tour of the historic buildings in Belfast, and even a pilgrimage to Van Morrison’s birth home!

I highly encourage you to consider it if joining us in Ireland.
