Labour Day, a federal statutory holiday in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday of every September each year. This holiday officially celebrates workers and the labour union movement.

Traditionally Labour Day was an occasion to campaign for and celebrate worker’s rights during parades organized by trade unions. It originally gave workers the chance to campaign for better working conditions or pay. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

Since then, Labour Day has served both as a day of formal recognition for the labour movement and as a day of rest and recreation for all workers.

World Humanitarian Day on August 19th honors humanitarian aid workers from all over the world. Established by the United Nations, this day commemorates the deaths of the 22 UN aid workers who lost their lives in a bombing of the United Nations Baghdad headquarters in 2003.

In the current wake of events, as the Taliban retake control of Afghanistan, we appreciate the efforts undertaken by the Canadian government and the aid workers who are continuously working towards helping Afghans move to Canada. We believe that refugees are built in the fabric of the country that leads to the diversity that Canada stands for. Their strong sense of belonging to Canada demonstrates their commitment to integrate into Canadian society and to call this country home.

Here at Humber, we recognize the efforts of aid workers who put their lives on the line to help affected people during times of global crisis. We honor the relief workers who selflessly serve every day to make the world a better place for the underprivileged and those whose homes and livelihoods are threatened by war.
