Sakura Watch, May 10, 2024–Did you know High Park has another variety of Japanese cherry blossom that blooms later? Fugenzo trees, located at the bottom of Cherry Hill and by Grenadier Pond, are another type of Japanese cherry blossom. They tend to bloom a week or two after the better-known Yoshino cherry blossoms have fallen.

Sakura Watch May 3, 2024—With only 25% left on trees, cherry blossom season winds down in High Park, with trees showing less than 25% open blossoms on average. A few trees are still holding onto more blossoms and seeming fuller, but this will be the final weekend before they, too, drop all their petals. But there are many other flowering plants and trees to enjoy if you want to visit High Park for the final days of the white cherry blossoms.

Sakura Watch April 27, 2024 - The last days of Peak Bloom are here, as petals begin to fall in High Park. During my visit on this rainy morning, I could see the beginning of petals falling in a few areas of the park, but overall, the trees still have between 90-95% open blossoms. So this weekend will be the last time to take in the peak bloom, as more and more blossoms will continue to fall with each passing day, especially if the weather brings more rain and wind.

Sakura Watch April 24, 2024—High Park is in Peak Bloom, with all areas showing 90-100% open blossoms! This week is the best time to visit before the rain returns on the weekend. How the weather will affect the trees depends on how heavy the rain and strong the winds will be. However, I hope to get one more report this weekend to check that progress (and will make it live the same day and not late like this one).

Sakura Watch April 20, 2024 - Full bloom has started, with trees beginning to show up to 75% of open blossoms, officially marking the beginning of Sakura Hanami for High Park. Some areas are further along than others, and the trees will continue to get fuller with each passing day. Now, we look towards the weather in the coming week to see how much time we will have to enjoy these cherry blossoms in 2024.

Sakura Watch April 16, 2024 - Peak bloom is close! Still, trees need better weather before putting on the High Park big show, as evidenced by the trees only showing less than 5% of open flowers today. Cold and rain will also slow any progress and push the bloom by a couple of days into this weekend and into next week. With these observations, I updated my bloom dates to start April 20 and continue until the 26th, as long as the weather cooperates.

Sakura Watch April 12, 2024 - The first open blossom was spotted, and the full bloom is now a week away. The trees are well into Stage 4, where the peduncles have begun to extend out of the buds. However, keep in mind that this is only the beginning. As the weather continues to be wet and cloudy over the weekend, the buds still need a bit more time before a much larger majority of cherry blossoms will open.

In my estimation, by Monday, we should see about 5%- 10% of the blossoms—which means a few random flowers open and scattered amongst the Sakura branches, a testament to the gradual and beautiful progression of the blossoms.

But then, with some sun and double-digit temperatures, we will begin to see a rapid improvement throughout the week, with a full bloom likely to start April 18 to the 24. See the website for more details, photos and video - https://www.sakurainhighpark.com/blog/2024/4/12/sakura-watch-april-12-2024

Sakura Watch April 12, 2024 - Exciting new to share! I spotted the very first open blossoms in High Park today! They were lower on the trunk and base of one tree and they marked the official beginning of the full bloom next week! Sakura Watch April 6, 2024—Despite the cold, buds begin to progress to the next stage of development. Since we had a week of snow and cold, I wasn’t expecting to see too much of a change this week, but I was in for a bit of a surprise as the buds were starting to move into the next Stage! Hopefully, the return of warmer weather will help get things back on track and move things along. So, for now, my predictive intuition suggests we should see the buds begin to open between April 18 and 24, with a full bloom a few days after (weather permitting, of course).

Sakura Watch March 27, 2024 - Cold and snow slowed progress by keeping the buds in Stage 2, but the return of warmer weather will keep things moving along into the next stages by next week. A few factors helped the trees survive the cold - the temperatures were not extreme, the cold only lasted less than a week, and the buds were still in an early enough stage to keep themselves protected. Overall, the buds continue to grow, swell and look healthy! So now we look to see if this warm weather is to stay - the higher the temperatures, the sooner we will bloom. 🌸

Overall we're still looking at bloom in the mid to later end of April, but that depends on the weather, so watch for more updates soon - you can see more photos and video here - https://www.sakurainhighpark.com/blog/2024/3/27/sakura-watch-march-27-2024

Sakura Watch March 20, 2024 - So blame it on the snow for a late post, but don't worry, this colder weather is only temporary and will slow down the progress. During my last visit, I saw that the buds were getting ready to move on from Stage 2 to 3! Once warmer weather returns, we should see things progress even more and keep us on track for an earlier bloom. How early? I still can't say it with 100% accuracy, but my intuition this year has been aiming for mid-April, similar to last year.

Sakura Watch March 13 2024 - Warmer weather continues to push the bud progress ahead of schedule in High Park. My latest visit saw trees filled with complete, well-rounded buds, many of which show distinct bright green tips, which I would have expected to see closer to the end of March! This is a definite sign that the trees are currently on track to bloom earlier this year. Just how early is still too early to say, as cold weather returns next week. Sakura Watch March 7, 2024 - My latest visit to High Park saw much of the same, with hints of progress to the next stage! The changes were subtle at best, and I’m not surprised, as the weather had not been overly warm the past week or so. But I did see hints of a few buds showing some bright green colour in their tips which is progress! If we get more warming trends in the coming weeks, then we will see an acceleration of the buds' development into April, but right now, it’s still too early to predict. Patience is key, and I’ll be there to keep tabs and report back so we’re all in the loop.

Sakura Watch February 28, 2024 - I’m back! And this past weekend, I took advantage of warmer weather to venture out to High Park for a first look at the cherry blossom trees’ progress for 2024! I was especially curious to see how this very mild winter has impacted the park and Sakura cherry trees in particular since I’ve already seen plenty of signs of early budding across various trees and bushes in my neighbourhood over the past few weeks.

I could see the blossom buds were healthy and oval-shaped with deep bronze colours. The tips were even starting to show some brighter copper tones, which I would expect the buds to look like when visiting around the second week of March. So this means the buds are ahead of schedule by a couple weeks or so. If this warming trend continues throughout March, it will point to a possible early bloom, but as they say, time will tell as it’s still a bit too early to be sure.
