HAPPY CANADA DAY!
Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada) is the national day of Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the Constitution Act, 1867 (then called the British North America Act, 1867), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as among Canadians internationally.

Frequently referred to as "Canada's birthday", particularly in the popular press, the occasion marks the joining of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867. Canada became a kingdom in its own right on that date, called the Dominion of Canada, but the British parliament and Cabinet kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982, when the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution.

Under the federal Holidays Act, Canada Day is observed on July 1, unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case July 2 is the statutory holiday, although celebratory events generally take place on July 1, even though it is not the legal holiday. If it falls on a Saturday, any businesses normally closed that day will generally dedicate the following Monday as a day off.

Beginning in 1958, the Canadian government began to orchestrate Dominion Day celebrations. That year, then Prime Minister John Diefenbaker requested that Secretary of State Ellen Fairclough put together appropriate events, with a budget of $14,000. Parliament was traditionally in session on July 1, but Fairclough persuaded Diefenbaker and the rest of the federal Cabinet to attend. Official celebrations thereafter consisted usually of Trooping the Colour ceremonies on Parliament Hill in the afternoon and evening, followed by a mass band concert and fireworks display, though Fairclough, who became Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, later expanded the bills to include performing folk and ethnic groups and the day became more casual and family oriented. Canada's centennial in 1967 is often seen as an important milestone in the history of Canadian patriotism and in Canada's maturing as a distinct, independent country, after which Dominion Day became more popular with average Canadians. Into the late 1960s, nationally televised, multi-cultural concerts held in Ottawa were added and the fête became known as Festival Canada. After 1980, the Canadian government began to promote celebrating Dominion Day beyond the national capital, giving grants and aid to cities across the country to help fund local activities.

Arguably one of the most iconic images of all time, the photo, taken in Vietnam in the year 1963, depicts the Buddhist monk Thích Quang burning himself to death. The reason for Quang's sacrifice stemmed from the feud between the Catholic Church and the Buddhist's, who made up 70-90% of the population.

Although, when U.S correspondents were informed that 'something important' was to take place outside the Cambodian embassy in Saigon, little did many journalist know or believe that anything of significance would take place. So unimpressed were many reporters that only a handful turned up. However, one of those who did was New York Times journalist Malcolm Browne, who would go on to receive a Pulitzer Prize for his work documenting the crisis.

The Fairmont Le Château Frontenac – Quebec City, Canada

The centrepiece of the old town, this high and mighty Québécoise castle – and revered UNESCO World Heritage Site – is steeped in a rich and heart-rending history.
Named after the 17th century governor of New France, Louis de Buade de Frontenac, it’s said that the old chief died on this spot, then known as the Chateau St-Louis, in 1698. While the exact cause of his death is unknown, the hopeless romantics amongst us suggest that the heartache he had for his then Paris bound wife didn’t help. Over three hundred years later, guests to the Château Frontenac have spotted the governor wandering around the halls looking for his soulmate.
If old school romance doesn’t float your boat, then this Quebec institution’s other, particularly touchy-feely spectre will. The so-called Woman in White has a reputation for climbing into bed with guests still on this earthly plane.

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada following the swearing-in of the 29th Ministry

The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, today issued the following statement after the swearing-in of the 29th Ministry:

“Canadians from all across this country sent a message that it is time for real change, and I am deeply honoured by the faith they have placed in my team and me. Canadians chose a positive and optimistic plan for the future, and we will immediately begin implementing our plan for a strong middle class.

“Today we have the pleasure of introducing the team of extraordinary Canadians who will serve in the new Ministry. This strong, diverse, and experienced team will serve all Canadians, and for the first time in our country’s history, there will be an equal number of women and men around the Cabinet table.

“Canadians expect to see their values and priorities reflected in their government, and we have listened closely to them. Canadians told us what kind of government they want, and we built the plan to make it happen.

“We are committed to investing in our economy, strengthening the middle class, and helping those working hard to join it. We will invest in job creation and broad-based prosperity to ensure every Canadian has a real and fair chance to succeed.

“We will shine more light on government to ensure it remains focused on the people it is meant to serve. Openness and transparency will be our constant companions, and we will work to restore Canadians’ trust in their government and in our democracy. We are committed to the highest ethical standards and applying the utmost care in the handling of public funds.

“We will demonstrate national leadership and work with the provinces and territories to take real action on climate change and create the clean jobs of tomorrow.

“We will further strengthen our great country with a renewed, nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous Peoples, based on a recognition of rights, respect, co-operation, and partnership. We will fulfil our sacred obligation to Canadian veterans and their families, who have given so much in service to our country. We are committed to both the security and safety of Canadians and the protection of their rights and freedoms. We will also reinvest in our cultural and creative industries and create an immigration system grounded in both compassion and economic opportunity.

“Canada is strong not in spite of its diversity, but because of it, and we are committed to bringing new leadership and a new tone to Ottawa. We also made a commitment to pursue our goals with a renewed sense of collaboration. Most importantly, we will be a government that governs for all Canadians and brings Canadians together.

“We will work tirelessly to honour the trust Canadians have given us, and together build an even better future for our children and grandchildren.” - See more at: http://pm.gc.ca/eng/news/2015/11/04/statement-prime-minister-canada-following-swearing-29th-ministry .kzZnx2U4.dpuf

Employer compliance system and fee

Starting February 21, 2015, employers hiring foreign nationals who are exempt from the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process will be required to submit information about their business or organization, the Offer of Employment form, and pay a fee to Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

As of that date, a foreign national who is exempt from the LMIA process will not be able to get an employer-specific work permit if their employer has not submitted the required information and paid the fee before the work permit application is submitted.

The employer compliance fee has been set at $230 and must be paid online. The fees collected will offset the cost of introducing robust employer compliance activities featuring inspections of thousands of employers.

Express Entry: So Far So Good

Anybody who had followed the government of Canada’s announcements regarding the launch of its new Express Entry selection system for Canadian immigration coming up to launch day on January 1, 2015, knew the rules and procedures that would govern the system, but nobody could say for certain how things might pan out.

Three months and six draws later, we are getting a fuller picture of how the system operates in reality.
In terms of how often Express Entry draws are made, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) appears to favour frequent draws that select a limited number of candidates. Before launch day, CIC officials said that an estimated 15 to 25 draws would be made in 2015. With six draws having taken place between January 31 and March 27, CIC is on track to get to the upper end of that estimated range if the regularity of draws remains consistent.

At the time of writing, the number of international students studying in Canada is over 250,000, a figure that is constantly growing. Many of these students are choosing Canada over other potential destinations, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and France, because of certain advantages that studying in Canada can bring.
