Dual citizenship

If more than one country recognizes you as a citizen, you have dual citizenship.

Under Canadian law, you can be both a Canadian citizen and a citizen of another country. However, some countries won’t let you keep their citizenship if you become a Canadian citizen.

You don’t apply for dual citizenship, and there is no related certificate. Canadians are allowed to take foreign citizenship while keeping their Canadian citizenship.

Changes to open work permit eligibility for spouses of international students

In the coming weeks, eligibility for open work permits for the spouses and common-law partners of international students will be updated.

Who can get an open work permit?

Eligibility is limited to the spouses and common-law partners of students in graduate (master’s and doctorate) and professional degree–granting programs only.

Once these changes are in effect, spouses and common-law partners of international students seeking to extend their existing work permit will continue to be eligible under this stream.

Who will not be eligible for an open work permit?

The spouses and common-law partners of international students in other levels of study, including undergraduate and college programs, will no longer be eligible for an open work permit unless they already hold an open work permit under this stream.

Increased Cost of Living Requirement for International Students

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) increased the cost-of-living financial requirement for a single study permit applicant from $10,000 to $20,635 as of January 1, 2024, more than double the previous requirement.

This is on top of the initial year tuition and the expense of travel for an overseas student to study in Canada. All new applications for study permits received on or after January 1, 2024, will be subject to this increase.

Express Entry in 2023

Of the 42 draws in 2023, the majority were all-program draws that considered candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program and Canadian Experience Class.

IRCC introduced six new categories for Express Entry draws. The new categories target candidates who have attributes that help IRCC meet its mandates to promote French outside of Quebec and to use immigration to strengthen Canada’s labour force and economy. The categories are:

· Healthcare
· Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
· Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
· Transport
· Agriculture and agri-food
· Strong French proficiency

Between the first draw of the year on January 11 and the December 21 draw, the IRCC issued 110,266 ITAs.

Sponsoring Your Loved One to Canada: Proving a Genuine Relationship 🤝

Are you planning to bring your spouse or partner to Canada under family class sponsorship? There are some important things to know!

Why Does IRCC Care About Your Relationship?

The Canadian government wants to make sure that the love between you and your partner is real. Sometimes, people might try to fake a relationship just to get permanent resident status.

What Can You Expect?

Here's what you need to do to prove your love:

💍 For Married Couples:
- Provide your marriage certificate
- If you or your spouse were married before, show proof of divorce
- If you have kids together, show their birth certificates or adoption records
- Share your wedding invitations and photos

👩‍❤️‍👨 For Common-law Couples:
- You need to live together in a conjugal partnership for at least one year
- Provide the same documents as married couples (except wedding photos and invitations)
- Also, show financial support evidence and proof that your relationship is recognized by friends and family

📜 What Else Do You Need?
- For both married and common-law couples, you should provide items from at least two of these sets of documents:
  - Proof of joint property ownership
  - Rental agreement with both your names
  - Joint utility accounts, credit card accounts, or bank accounts
  - Vehicle insurance with both names
  - Government documents showing the same address

❗️ Important: If you can't provide two of these documents, you'll need to explain why.

Remember, the key is to show that your relationship is real and genuine. 💌 If you have any questions or need more guidance, feel free to reach out to us!

🌟 Thinking about Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)? 🎓

Let's talk about what to watch out for to avoid any hiccups:

1️⃣ Non-Eligible Schools: Make sure your school is on the eligibility list! Private language schools, vocational schools and private colleges generally are not able to issue provincially recognized educational credentials, and completing their programs will not allow a student to obtain a PGWP.

2️⃣ Part-Time Study Alert: You are allowed to study part-time in your last semester only. So, if you have studied part-time in any period before the final semester of your study time, your application will be rejected.

3️⃣ Mind the Gap: Study gaps due to various reasons? Communicate them clearly to IRCC, or risk rejection.

4️⃣ Expired Permit: Don’t let your study permit expire during PGWP application. Renew it on time to avoid rejection.

5️⃣ Transcript Troubles: Your educational transcript is a must. Forget it, and PGWP rejection follows.

6️⃣ Unauthorized Work: Worked excessively or during unauthorized periods? Get ready for a PGWP rejection.

7️⃣ IRCC Oops: Rare, but possible. IRCC errors can lead to rejection. Keep your fingers crossed.

Stay informed, follow the rules, and ace that PGWP application, we are always here to help you! 💼🎓

Health Care in Canada

🏥 One of the appealing aspects of immigrating to Canada is the country's top-notch healthcare system.

✅ Canadian citizens, permanent residents, some foreign workers on work permits, and certain international students can apply for public health insurance from their province or territory.

🩺 General healthcare requirements, like check-ups, lab tests, and treatments at the doctor’s office or hospital, are covered as long as they're medically necessary.

💊 However, there are limits to what's covered:

- Prescription drugs are not included.
- Specialist services, like optometrists, osteopaths, chiropractors, and physiotherapists, are generally not covered.
- Eyeglasses, hearing aids, and dental care are also not covered, but the Canadian Dental Care Plan is in the process of being launched to provide coverage for low- and middle-income Canadians.
- Psychotherapy and counseling are not covered, but mental health services delivered through hospitals or specific initiatives are covered.

👨‍⚕️ Family doctors, also known as General Practitioners (GPs), play an important role in providing primary health care services. Finding a family doctor sometimes can be tricky. You can register with the provincial health care system, seek recommendations from friends or colleagues, or use online resources like the Canadian Association's Doctor Finder tool. 📲🔍

08/01/2023

🇨🇦 Last week, Canadian provinces held Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draws, inviting candidates to apply for Permanent Residence (PR). Here are the results:

🍁 Ontario: July 28 - a general draw under the French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream resulted in 95 Notifications of Interest (NOIs) issued to candidates with CRS scores between 321-374.

🍁 British Columbia: July 25 - two draws took place across 6 different streams, offering a total of 175 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in a general draw. The streams included Skilled Worker, Express Entry British Columbia (EEBC) Option, International Graduate, and Entry Level and Semi-Skilled.

🍁 Manitoba: July 28 - three separate draws were held for the Skilled Worker in Manitoba Stream, International Education Stream, and Skilled Worker Overseas Stream, issuing a total of 354 Letters of Advice to Apply (LAAs).

🍁 Quebec: July 20 - Quebec invited 1633 candidates from the Arrima portal with French proficiency or equivalent, a minimum CRS score of 596 points, or a valid job offer outside the Montreal Metropolitan Area.

While most PNP streams are dedicated to professionals (often in targeted professions), there are also PNP streams that target other kinds of competencies and qualifications, including international students who have studied in that specific province, and those with French language ability.

07/25/2023

⏳Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) now has a processing time of 30 days for Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) for spousal applicants.🫂

The measure applies to spousal applicants who have already applied for permanent residency in Canada. Rather than require applicants to remain in their home countries while awaiting IRCC’s decision, they can now come to Canada while they are waiting for their application to be processed.

Spouses and dependents on a TRV are not eligible to work or study in Canada until they are either approved for permanent residence or obtain a work or study permit. 🛠📕

There is a processing time of 12 months for permanent residence applications through family class sponsorship. However, now that spousal TRVs are processed within 30 days, and IRCC has a service standard of 60 days for work permits, it could take as little as three months (90 days) for a sponsored spouse, partner, or dependent child to be able to arrive in Canada and start working while they wait for IRCC’s decision on their permanent resident application.📆

These measures help to bring families closer together, making it easier and faster to adapt to Canadian society.
