IRCC has announced substantial restrictions on the eligibility for Open Work Permits for spouses and dependent children of international students and foreign workers.

Key changes include:
• Families of international students enrolled in low-quality institutions (commonly referred to as “diploma mills”) will no longer qualify.
• Dependents of low-skilled workers will also face disqualification.

Refer to the images below for detailed information on these policy changes.

This move aims to uphold the integrity of Canada’s immigration programs while ensuring alignment with the nation’s labor market needs.

Just Announced: Canada is tightening eligibility for open work permits (OWPs) for family members of temporary residents.

Starting January 21, 2025, only spouses of international students in specific programs (master's, doctoral, or select professional programs 16+ months long) and high-skilled foreign workers (TEER 0, 1, or select TEER 2/3 occupations in high-demand sectors) will qualify.

Dependent children are no longer eligible.

Existing permits remain valid, and renewals are possible under specific conditions.

Spouses of workers under free trade agreements or transitioning to permanent residency are exempt.

Our Take on this change:

The changes to the Open Work Permit program represent a significant shift in Canadian immigration policy affecting family members of international students and foreign workers.

The new requirements will have far-reaching impacts on the immigration landscape, particularly on many who would have previously relied on the family OWP as a path to employment in Canada.

Those potentially affected must understand these new policies, and explore other pathways to legal employment if they are no longer eligible for the OWP.

The government may periodically revise these guidelines, so careful monitoring is advised for those considering Canadian immigration.

Important Update for Canada Immigration Applicants!

IRCC has announced significant reforms to enhance the integrity and security of Canada’s immigration system. Here’s what you need to know:

Key Changes

1️⃣ New Authority to Cancel, Suspend, or Modify Visas

IRCC now has greater power to cancel, suspend, or modify visas in cases of fraud, misrepresentation, or security risks. This ensures swift action against individuals or groups exploiting the system.

2️⃣ Cracking Down on Fraud

The reforms target fraudulent activities, such as misuse of Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) in Express Entry. For example, additional points for job offers under Express Entry will be removed to reduce incentives for fraud.

3️⃣ Public Interest Protections

In exceptional cases, like large-scale fraud attempts, IRCC can suspend or stop accepting applications. This ensures resources are used effectively and the system remains secure.

4️⃣ Impact on Temporary and Permanent Residents

Both temporary and permanent residency applications are affected. Visas can be canceled or suspended if applicants provide false information or pose security risks.

5️⃣ Leveraging Technology

IRCC is using advanced analytics, AI, and tools like the ReportIn app (with facial recognition and location tracking) to improve decision-making and border enforcement.

💡 What This Means for You

- Accuracy is Critical: Ensure all information in your application is truthful and accurate.

- Misrepresentation or fraud can lead to visa cancellations or bans.

- Stay Informed: Keep up with IRCC updates to avoid surprises and ensure compliance with new rules.

- Seek Guidance: If you’re unsure about your application, consult an immigration professional to navigate these changes effectively.

These reforms reflect Canada’s commitment to a secure, fair, and efficient immigration system. Let’s stay informed and prepared!

Canada 🇨🇦 pauses applications for parent, grandparent permanent residency sponsorships until further notice. What is the alternative?

With the recent pause on the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP), alternatives for family reunification in Canada include:

• Super Visa: This allows parents and grandparents to stay for up to five years, with the possibility of extensions. It requires proof of financial support and medical insurance coverage.

• Temporary Visitor Visas: These permit shorter stays of up to six months, with easier application processes compared to permanent residency.

• Economic Immigration: Parents or grandparents may qualify for permanent residence through other programs such as entrepreneur programs if they meet specific criteria such as business ownership or senior management experience, a viable business plan and ability to invest in a new or existing business.

Questions about these options? Please feel free to leave them in comments down below.

Justin Trudeau’s Resignation: What It Means for Canadian Immigration

Experts agree: Trudeau’s resignation won’t spark immediate changes to Canadian immigration policy, but it could set the stage for longer-term shifts. Here’s what we know:

1️⃣ Minimal Immediate Impact: IRCC operations and current policies—like Express Entry updates—will remain unaffected for now. Legislative changes are already in motion.

2️⃣ Policy Continuity: The recent reduction in immigration targets reflects public concerns about housing and healthcare. These trends may persist under new leadership.

3️⃣ A Shift to the Right? With public sentiment shifting and U.S. policy tightening under Trump’s return, experts warn of a stricter approach to immigration in the future.

4️⃣ Public Opinion Matters: Canadians increasingly voice concerns over infrastructure and social services. The next government will need to balance these issues while upholding Canada’s immigrant-friendly reputation.

In the short term, it’s steady as she goes. But the political landscape is shifting—and so may Canada’s approach to immigration.

📢 A Historic Surge in Asylum Claims in Canada

For the first time in Canadian history, over 100,000 asylum claims have been filed in a single year by individuals who initially entered Canada on other temporary statuses, such as visitor, worker, or student permits.

In stark contrast, only 12,345 claims were filed in 2021. As of November this year, that number has skyrocketed to 104,830, marking an unprecedented shift in Canada’s immigration landscape.

This surge has placed significant strain on the IRCC, challenging the system’s ability to manage the growing volume effectively.

Stay informed as this evolving situation reshapes Canada’s asylum framework.
