Black bears in Ucluelet are drawn to the coast at low tide. They're expert rock turners, searching for a tasty snack of crabs and shellfish.

World Oceans Day - on June 8th - is a time to pause and reflect on the innumerable ways the ocean impacts our lives, particularly in a coastal location like Tofino.

From the temperate climate (Vancouver Island has the warmest winters in Canada) to the recreation opportunities like kayaking or surfing, there are so many ways we benefit from the ocean.

We can also have an impact on the ocean, so let's make it a positive one! We invite you to join the Washed Up Wednesdays beach cleans, hosted by Surfrider Pacific Rim and us at Tourism Tofino, every Wednesday starting July 3rd until August 21st.

Other ways to learn and be ocean-conscious while in Tofino:

🍃 Take the ʔiisaak pledge through Tla o qui aht Tribal Parks to learn how to implement Tla-o-qui-aht teachings and laws while you are in the territory.

🐟 Join Redd Fish Restoration Society and Ucluelet Aquarium along the "Salmon Trail" - a series of salmon-centric interpretation events that happen weekly, July 1st - August 31st.

🌾 Check out the workshops and courses offered by Raincoast Education Society throughout the year.

🪢 Join The Den Ucluelet Aquarium Surfrider Pacific Rim and Hello Nature for their beach clean from 5-7 PM June 8th in Ucluelet. Sign up through DM at The Den as space for these cleanups is limited.

Tofino is situated on the tip of the Esowista Peninsula, within the traditional Haahuulthi of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations and their Tribal Parks.

Sam grew up surrounded by the pacific ocean on Salt Spring Island, but didn’t discover her passion for sea kayaking until moving out to the West Coast of Vancouver Island some 10 years ago. Sam loves to get out and explore in all weather and especially loves low-tide paddles in the intertidal zone. She lives in Ucluelet with her family and spends her free time enjoying the endless adventures and bounty the West Coast has to offer.
Sam has earned her Assistant Overnight Guide certification through the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of BC and strives to continue to be ever growing and evolving as a paddler.
