WOW! 😍 Have you visited Ministers Island? Gorgeous new instalments in The Mansion tell the story of railway tycoon Sir William Van Horne, who owned this 500 acre slice of paradise as his summer estate. If you’re visiting St. Andrews by-the-Sea, this is a stop you don’t want to miss. Here are a few snaps from my recent visit for a tour, walkabout and lovely evening concert ( was incredible and I’m hoping to be back for the incomparable Catherine McLellan: catherinemusic). 📸

We’re often asked to make exceptions to our ‘no pets’ policy. Unfortunately is not dog friendly… and here’s one of the main reasons! Lots of critters share the area and some don’t make good friends for our beloved pets. This was a neat interaction with a baby (quite possibly the very one responsible for my own dog’s terrible quilling last year, but I didn’t hold it against him). The second half of the video is in the comments.

This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which these nations first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources, but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

One of our guests last summer shared that her favourite thing about visiting #standrewsbythesea was the wildlife. In her words, the road to #saltymaiden is “like a drive-through zoo”! The cottage’s regular visitors include bald eagles, blue heron, loons and eiders, porpoises in the bay, a friendly red fox, porcupines (mama and baby!), groundhogs who’ve made homes down by the beach and pop up to sun themselves on the rocks, and of course the majestic creatures St. Andrews is best know for, incredibly tame white-tailed deer. I caught this lovely lady on video this morning driving down to the cottage and had to tap the horn a few times to ask her to move off the road. 😂 She was relaxed while enjoying her breakfast and in no hurry.
