Heads up! Trail maintenance day with Voyageur Trail Association on Saturday May25th. For more info and to sign up Saulteaux Voyageur Trail Club by May22nd to join us for the after work get together.

REGISTER BY WEDNESDAY MAY 22 - SEE BOTTOM
The Voyageur Trail is holding a trail maintenance blitz on Saturday May 25, 2024 to improve hiking trails in the Harmony Bay-Stokely-King Mountain areas. The event is open to members and non-member volunteers. We will carpool from Sault Ste. Marie at 8:45 a.m., and can arrange to meet others in the Havilland Bay-Stokely area.

We will form into work crews to cover as much of the trail as we can. The work will involve cutting small living trees using loppers or hand pruners (secateurs), cutting smaller fallen trees using a bow saw, repairing blazes (trail markers) by pulling out the nails, and replacing blazes that cannot be repaired or are missing.

Volunteers should have a reasonable level of fitness. Crews may have to walk up to 5 km return (to and from) a trailhead to reach their work point, and much of this trail section is hilly. Volunteers will have to remain with the crew from the start (~8:45 a.m.) to the finish (~3:00 p.m.).

Snacks and an après-outing mid-afternoon lunch will be provided to show our appreciation to the day's volunteers. In the event of poor weather conditions, we will delay the trail blitz until the following day, Sunday May 26.

Volunteers must register by May 22. Email [email protected] or call 705-206-3538. If you prefer to help behind the scenes, please contact us to discuss.

Snow is back and a sweet deal at Stokely Creek Lodge You might even consider adding a stay at Norms Cabin! blaqbear.ca/norms-cabin

We started off slow with no snow. Then it was great until we got rain. Now it is snowing like crazy and our hopes are high. They say it is an El Nino winter which favors warmer than normal conditions. After the first couple weeks we weathered the warmer conditions and kept our skiers on the trails.....

I have heard that the Ermatinger House in Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest stone building west of Toronto. Built around 1814 this historic building has been restored to the period when Charles H. Ermatinger lived there with his family. Post a pic of a historic building in your home.

National Indigenous Peoples Day has been celebrated on the summer soltice since 1996. This day was chosen because of its cultural significance and because it is a day on which many Indigenous communities in Canada celebrate their heritage. There are no shortage of experiences to immerse yourself in and celebrate with our Indigenous neighbours. In Sault Ste. Marie, many of the murals painted during the Summer Moon Fest were painted by Indigenous Artists. This one and several others were done by Tom Sinclair Check them out at https://saulttourism.com/travelogues/walking-tour-of-the-murals and check out further Indigenous experiences at https://northernontario.travel/indigenous

A reminder that there is still a fire ban in effect in Northern Ontario. Please obey the rules. This is to protect all of us.

There are two reasons for a Restricted Fire Zone
1. When outdoor conditions are extremely dry.
2. The number of fires occurring has stretched firefighting resources to capacity.

Penalties can be severe.
Once a Restricted Fire Zone is declared, it is illegal to set a fire for any purpose within the affected area unless specific conditions have been met.
Failure to comply could result in;
$25,000 fine plus the costs associated with fighting any forest fires
and 3 months in jail

Fun Fact Friday - Although Lake Superior is the largest lake in the world by surface area, by volume of water it is smaller than Lake Baikal in Siberia and Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. That said, Lake Superior still has enough water to cover all of North and South America in water 30 cm deep.
