An icy love affair…

When salty sea ice meets a fresh water iceberg. A courtship that starts when a solid meets a liquid, and if emulation is the biggest form of flattery, then imagine an ocean that freezes in hopes of holding her for a moment. A brief embrace before they melt into one with the return of the midnight sun.

The season is here!

The beauty of the Arctic sunset lifted the frosty blues from our camp on sea ice. This time of year on the ice the evenings are a frosty -30C , it’s a humbling reminder of our vulnerability to survive in nature; our need to adapt to the wild. It is sometimes easy to forget when we change the wild without thought of impact for our comfortable survival in our anthropogenic cities. For me a polar experience on sea ice, where life exists in the extreme, changes you beyond just pretty photos.

late season , the leads get big. A snowmobile will still get across, but late season requires jon boats as well ( flat bottomed "duck" boats ).

It's funny. Early season we look for an easy way to cross a lead ( always looks easier further down ). And then late season, we just cross the same lead 3 or 4 times wider :)

If you're travelling the land in the arctic during the ice season, best to invest in a good pair of goggles ( I've had mild snow blindness a couple times ) . But on occasion glasses are better ( more convenient ). As ZZ top says, cheap sun glasses ( thank you Noah for picking these up on the "trail" :)
