We often leave a bottle of wine for our guests at various properties. Love to get some thoughts on good Canadian wines in around the $17 price point. Thanks

An interesting Place we live

🌍🌋 Newfoundland's geological history is a fascinating journey through time! From ancient bedrock to volcanic eruptions, tectonic collisions to glacial sculpting, this island's landscapes are a geological paradise 🏞️🌋.

Newfoundland, the easternmost province of Canada, is a geological paradise with a rich and complex history spanning hundreds of millions of years. Its diverse landscapes and rock formations tell a captivating story of the Earth's ever-changing processes, including ancient volcanic activity, tectonic collisions, and the shaping forces of ice during the last Ice Age. 🗺️

The foundation of Newfoundland's geology lies in its ancient bedrock, which dates back over 1.2 billion years. This bedrock is composed of various rock types, including gneiss, granite, and basalt, which provide a glimpse into the island's ancient origins. It is believed that Newfoundland was once part of a larger landmass, Laurentia, which also included parts of present-day North America and Greenland. 🌋

Around 600 million years ago, during the Ediacaran Period, Newfoundland was situated near the equator and covered by a warm, shallow sea. This marine environment allowed for the deposition of sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone and shale, which can still be found in some areas today. These sedimentary rocks contain important fossil records of early complex life forms, offering valuable insights into the Earth's biological evolution. 🪨

Approximately 430 million years ago, during the Silurian Period, Newfoundland experienced intense volcanic activity. This volcanic activity resulted in the formation of extensive lava flows and the eruption of volcanic ash and debris. These volcanic rocks, known as the Avalon Terrane, now make up a significant portion of Newfoundland's geology, particularly in the eastern and central regions of the island. 🌋

During the collision of tectonic plates, which began around 375 million years ago, Newfoundland became part of the Appalachian Mountain range. This collision led to the folding, faulting, and uplift of rocks, creating the rugged mountainous terrain that characterizes much of the island's interior. The highest peaks in Newfoundland, such as Gros Morne and the Long Range Mountains, are a testament to these tectonic forces. 🏔️

The most recent major geological event to shape Newfoundland occurred during the last Ice Age, which began around 2.6 million years ago and lasted until about 10,000 years ago. As massive glaciers advanced and retreated across the island, they carved out deep fjords, U-shaped valleys, and dramatic coastal cliffs. The resulting landscapes of Newfoundland are a testament to the powerful forces of glaciation and the beauty they have created. 🧊
