The way to Thien Cung is a perilous one, covered on both sides by thick forest. After entering a narrow gate, the grotto’s 130-meter-long girth opens up. Getting in we are more astonished in front of the very animated and splendid beauty which is made from stalactite. On the east wall of the grotto, there is a grandiose and imposing picture with characters of tales.

- VIETNAM'S RICE FIELDS WEEK -

After the Harvest

When the harvest is completed, the rice fields in Vietnam are wide, flat open spaces. The farmers collect the straw for the cows and then burn the fields to replenish the soil and ready them for replanting. The colors become more subdued, from gold to light brown. The scent of straw and smoke fills the air.

After it's harvested, the rice is still filled with water. It needs to dry to be safe for storing, milling, and shipping into homes around the world. The grains of rice still have their beautiful golden husk. The rice is sifted through large woven baskets and laid out to dry in the sunshine - nature's strongest tool. It can be mesmerizing to watch the grains as they fall from the basket. It is a beautiful ending to the process. After the harvest, the cycle begins again, allowing the kaleidoscope of colors to shine again in the rice paddies throughout Vietnam.

- VIETNAM'S RICE FIELDS WEEK -

Young Rice

In Vietnam, rice is life. There's no other product that feeds as many people and creates as many jobs. Just like us, rice paddies go through their cycles - from birth to harvest and back again.

Rice seedling are planted in flooded fields after they've been smoothed by plows. This season is one of new beginnings as the young rice slowly increases its strength and grows towards the sun. The water in the fields reflects the open sky, which, in addition to be beautiful to look at, is interesting in terms of artistry. There is a blur that occurs between the horizon line between the sky and the fields. They become one; a mirage that highlights the form of the farmers and their non la hats.

- Hoi An Travel Beyond Week -

It is often noted that Hoi An is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage location, but how did it get this special status?
The Ancient town of Hoi An is filled with golden architecture that dates back hundreds of years and local traditions that have stood the test of time. The beauty of the old town mean that you’ll likely be contending with lots of tourists to take photos of the most popular locations, which brings me to my first tip: Don’t sleep in! You can take a trip back in time before Hoi An became a world class destination, if you wake up as early as possible and hitting the town at sunrise when vendors are just starting to set up their wares and the glow of the early sun tints everything gold.
Allow yourself some time to wander the small hem alleyways that wind out from the center. There you can see the way that locals set up street dining and shops of all kinds. Grab a cafe on a low stool and watch the town wake up.

- Symbols of Vietnam Week -

Vietnam is filled with spectacular vistas and a wealth of colors, yet, there's more to this country than just the visual beauty. It is also a rich tapestry of history and symbolism that are layered under the surface.

The poetic beauty of Vietnam's national dress, the ao dai, is recognizable throughout the world. Its elegant lines remain modern, despite the fact that it is actually more than 300 years old. Did you know that Lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát of the Nguyen Dynasty created the concept for the ao dai in 1744 when he decreed that all Vietnamese men and women in his court wear a long gown with trousers. Yet, the form fitting modern ao dai wasn't created until the beginning of the twentieth century when it was introduced to the world at the Paris fashion shows in the 1920s.

Even though the ao dai isn't worn as regularly as it used to be, it is still an iconic part of Vietnamese life. The beauty and timeless style of the garment speaks to the past and future of Vietnam.

- Symbols of Vietnam Week -

The humble buffalo has always had an important place in Vietnamese culture. Its epic strength and faithful qualities have found their way into literature, poetry, paintings, artifacts and even the lunar New Year zodiac.

It is the national animal of Vietnam and, unsurprisingly, it is one of the most popular images to appear in artwork. One of the most famous depictions is of a young boy playing the flute on the buffalo's broad back. This scene has been repeated through the centuries on lacquerwork, oil paintings, sculpture, watercolors and more, but certain details always remain the same. The child and the animal are shown in the idyllic countryside; they represent peace, diligence and wealth that can be found by following the traditional ways of rural life.

The buffalo has been a protective totem for the Vietnamese people for thousands of years with the animal appearing on some of the earliest artifacts found from ancient civilizations. It remains an integral part of agricultural life in the country.

- Symbols of Vietnam Week -

Vietnam's carrying pole is a beautiful representation of what it looks like when strength meets grace. This seemingly simple structure is actually a marvel of engineering that has existed for thousands of years. The flexible bamboo pole allows the wearer to carry loads that would become a crushing weight if carried in a backpack.

The mind bending amounts of produce and other wares that women carry with relative ease recall the myth of Atlas holding the weight of the world on his back. In Vietnam, the saying goes: a woman with a carrying pole holds the family, and her country on her shoulders. This classic cultural item symbolizes balance and harmony, power and poise. What do you see when you look at this special symbol?

- Symbols of Vietnam Week -

Did you know that the lotus is Vietnam's national flower?
Long before Monet painted his famous waterlilies in France, the lotus bloomed all over Vietnam and became one of its most recognizable symbols. The delicate flower folds in on itself and sinks underwater at dusk only to spread open its petals and rise once again to the surface at dawn. As a result the flower symbolize new beginnings, optimism and purity.

Not only is the flower stunning to look at, it is also an essential ingredient in many Vietnamese dishes. The lotus stems are often used in salads; the seeds can be eaten raw or boiled and used in rice or salads; while the stamens can be used to make tea.
Just like the flower itself, this important symbol of Vietnam remains constantly youthful and joyful.
