During our trip to Mexico last November, we spent time in Javier’s hometown of Zacatecas, and this photo captures one of the stunning views from the Museo Rafael Coronel. The vibrant bougainvillea, the historic stonework, and the backdrop of Cerro de la Bufa made this moment so special. Every corner we turned was something beautiful to capture including this scene. There’s something so peaceful about this seal resting by the water. These gentle creatures have a way of stealing my heart every time I see them. Living in Vancouver means I get to spot seals often, and yet each encounter feels just as magical as the first. They bring such joy and remind me to appreciate the beauty of the moment. I’m so grateful for these amazing ocean neighbors who make life here even more special!

As I sit here on Christmas Eve, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible memories we’ve made this year. One of the most special moments was our recent trip to Mexico, specifically to Javier’s hometown, Zacatecas. There’s something magical about being immersed in the place where he grew up—the streets he once wandered, the traditions he cherishes, and the warmth of the people who hold such an important place in his heart. This image was captured during our time there, a memory that will forever remind us of the beauty and love we experienced.

Being away from family during the holidays is never easy. Javier and I both know how hard it can be, living so far from the people who raised us and shaped us. But this year, being in Zacatecas felt like a bridge to the love we miss. It was a reminder of how deeply rooted we are in our families, even when miles separate us.

While we wish we could celebrate with both of our families tonight, we’re so grateful to have each other. Building our own little traditions, carrying pieces of our loved ones in our hearts, and finding joy in the here and now—this is what the holidays mean to us this year.

To our families, near and far, and to all of you reading this: may your Christmas be filled with love, peace, and gratitude for the moments that truly matter.

I’ve known Chris and Amanda for many years, so it was extra special to see their beautiful family and document these moments for them. Golden hour is truly one of my favorite times of the day to photograph landscapes. The warm, soft light just after sunrise or before sunset casts a magical glow over everything it touches, enhancing textures, colors, and shadows. Mexico has been absolutely incredible so far! This is my first trip out of Canada in five years, and I couldn’t be happier to be exploring again, especially with my love in his home country.

One of the most special parts has been spending time with his family and meeting even more of them—it’s been so heartwarming to feel so welcomed. We’ve also had some amazing adventures, including visiting the beautiful town of Sayulita, where this photo was taken. It was such a joy to swim in the warm ocean and soak up all the sunshine.

With two weeks left, I’m cherishing every moment and can’t wait for what’s still to come!

A recent family photoshoot from while I was in Yellowknife. Chelsea and Matt have been in my life for so many years! Our history goes way back—through school, work, and some truly memorable moments together. Eight years ago, I had the honor of capturing them as a couple. Fast forward to three years ago, photographing them with their firstborn, sweet Aubrey, and now last summer, with their newest baby girl, Clara, and the excitement of their engagement!

They are truly beautiful souls, inside and out, and seeing them grow as parents has been nothing short of inspiring. I’m so grateful to have been there to capture these precious milestones over the years and hope to continue documenting their journey for a lifetime. Finally getting around to posting about my fall trip to Yellowknife a few months back!

The colors were absolutely stunning, with the trees painted in rich reds, golds, and oranges. But what really stood out were the mushrooms—there seemed to be so many different types, each with its own unique shape and color. It felt like a mini treasure hunt on every hike, discovering clusters of mushrooms tucked away in the moss and along the trails.

There’s something incredibly sacred about the northern lights—a beauty that feels almost beyond words. Seeing the aurora dance across the sky in Yellowknife is like watching magic unfold. Colors ripple and pulse in shades of green, pink, and violet, spilling across the darkness in delicate waves. It’s breathtaking, humbling, and impossibly fleeting, like nature’s own silent symphony.

In the North, these lights are more than a natural phenomenon; they’re part of the heartbeat of the land, a reminder of nature’s wonder and power. They’re woven into the stories, the spirit, and the sense of place. Standing beneath them, bundled up against the chill, it feels as though the entire universe pauses with you, letting you in on a secret shared only with those who journey this far north.

I find myself missing Yellowknife deeply, craving that stillness and that unearthly glow. I miss the awe of standing there, feeling so small and yet so connected. It’s as if every time you watch the aurora, you leave a piece of yourself under those lights—and maybe that’s why I’ll always feel the pull back north.

This image captures a single, delicate lily pad floating gently on still waters. Its vibrant green stands in stark contrast to the deep, almost mysterious hues of the surrounding water, with a soft play of light accentuating its smooth surface. Despite its fragility, the lily pad persists, anchored yet seemingly untethered, a symbol of resilience in an unpredictable environment.

Much like life, this lily pad demonstrates a delicate balance. We float through existence, vulnerable to unseen forces, yet we endure. Just as the lily pad depends on stillness for survival, so too must we find moments of peace amidst life’s uncertainty. Both life and the lily pad teach us that fragility and strength coexist, and in embracing our delicate nature, we find our own unique resilience.

This summer up north was truly unforgettable. I’m so grateful for the time I had to explore the stunning landscapes around Yellowknife, especially sharing those adventures with my brother. From hiking through endless trails to witnessing the beauty of the northern wilderness, every moment was special. Last summer, I was so happy to witness baby foxes up close, playing among the wildflowers with their siblings by their den. I accidentally found this spot while waiting for a client for a photoshoot.

Over the past four years, I’ve had the absolute joy of photographing this beautiful family and their precious baby girl. Watching her grow and capturing these special moments year after year has been an incredible experience. These were from this past summer in Yellowknife on my recent trip!

That moment when you’re focusing on one thing and suddenly something pops into your peripheral vision… like it’s been watching you the whole time! As I was filming a painted anemone, out of nowhere, a swimming scallop burst into the frame—like a wind-up toy with a mind of its own. For a split second, I thought I was being judged by a clattering set of teeth from a cartoon! The colors and marine life near Nanaimo were absolutely dazzling on this recent dive trip. Huge shoutout to my work @divinglocker for letting me go out for work and assist Instructor @katouski it was an incredible experience. Can’t wait to get back underwater guiding the next adventure—though next time, I’ll keep an eye out for sneaky scallops. They’ve got way too much personality for their size! My name is Danielle Gillard and I am originally from Yellowknife, NT, Canada. I have been doing photography for over 12 years. I specialize mostly in portraiture and travel photography. I recently graduated from CATO in Kelowna with a diploma in Digital Photography.

This year starting in March I will be moving to Australia for a few years! Travelling around Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Papa New Guinea, Fiji and many more countries! Follow my page to be apart of my journey :)
