Most recent group headed out to tackle the 47km wet and rugged Juan De Fuca Marine Trail.
The trail begins at China Beach Day Use Area near Jordan River and finishes over 45km later at Botanical Beach in Port Renfrew.
This group trained for several months prior to ensure their success on this trail and even then they were challenged along the way. They chose to take 4 days to hike this trail and said they wouldn’t attempt to do it any faster.
The Juan De Fuca Marine Trail is a THRU- HIKE, meaning that there is no return loop or route that takes you to where you began. In these scenarios you must arrange some form of transportation in order to return to where you started. The most common way is to leave your car parked at one trailhead and arrange pick-up at the trails exit. Sadly, thieves have been known to ransack overnight vehicles at many of these overnight parks. If you do plan on parking overnight DO NOT leave valuables in the car. Only bring what you’ll need for your hike.
In order to avoid any risk and keep your mind at ease, you can arrange pick up and drop off to and from the trail. This group decided to leave their car in the driveway and travel by shuttle, having designated pick up and drop off times that worked for them!
Friendly reminder to research your trip thoroughly, plan and pack carefully (ensure you have the 10 essential survival items), check tide charts, have an escape or rescue plan and leave your detailed plan with a competent person.
