We're wishing a great big Happy 120th Birthday to the legendary, the one and only, the beautiful and strong, schooner Maple Leaf!

We'd like to invite you to share your favourite pic or anecdote of Maple Leaf in the comments!

Slipping down the ways of Coal Harbour, Vancouver in July 1904, built by Capt William Watts, the founder of Vancouver Shipyards (now Seaspan Corporation), she became the fastest yacht on the coast, favoured to win the first-ever Trans Pacific Sailing race in 1906. (Read the link in the comments to find out what happened.)

New-fangled, like the newest of cutting-edge luxury yachts, she was the first ship north of San Francisco with electric lights, and one of the first with the now ubiquitous external lead keel.

This keel inadvertently resulted in Maple Leaf’s longevity as, back then, engineers weren't sure how strong the hull had to be to hold all that lead underneath. So they overbuilt her (the frames have 18-inch centres - see pics). As a result, during the war the government obtained the ship from owner Alexander Maclaren and was able to send it to fish for the country.

With a second-world-war rebuild and lots and lots of TLC by Capt Harold Helland and others (including Canfisco), she fished the Bering Sea for halibut for decades (think Deadliest Catch without the tech, the safety gear and the TV cameras), often returning as the Highliner.

Featured in Smiles Café (home of fish and chips) in Prince Rupert for decades and also on the wall of the Highliner Hotel & Conference Centre - her name was Parma during this era. Still going strong thanks to that amazing hull, she was retired from fishing in the late 1970s and one fateful day, ecotourism visionary Brian Falconer and his brother heard a tale about a boat for sale that once was a sailing ship. They checked it out (there might have been a bottle of rum, a night-time guard, and some crowbars involved).

When they saw that hull they knew she was the real deal. 6 years and lots of love later, she sailed at the World Exposition in Vancouver in 1986, a schooner once again (see pic from the cover of Pacific Yachting).

Since then, Brian and then Kevin Smith and Maureen Gordon and all of their dedicated local crew and craftspeople at Commodores Boats, have cared for this piece of coastal history, while helping to save great swaths of the Great Bear Rainforest ecosystems, along with a strong coastal community dedicated to a conservation based economy. She now operates expedition cruises along the coast from Haida Gwaii to the Salish Sea.

To stand aboard her Douglas fir deck, to sleep embraced by her yellow cedar frames, to raise the power of her 2500 square feet of sail is like nothing else on this planet.

We love you Maple Leaf. ❤️

Happy 120th birthday …may you live at least 120 more.

Our trips along this beloved coastline operate in or along the territories of dozens of Indigenous Nations, from the W̱SÁNEĆ and Cowichan tribes in the south to the Haida and Tlingit in the north, who speak dozens of languages.

This Indigenous People’s Day, consider exploring a map (linked in the comments) of the languages of this coast. Language holds culture. People along the coast are working hard to revitalize and preserve these languages, in programs like the Skidegate Haida Language Program—an amazing endeavour where people are learning Haida and elders of average age 80 work 5 days a week, 10 months a year.

Did you know, each humpback whale is equivalent to about 30,000 trees for the amount of carbon it sequesters out of the atmosphere? Whaled almost to the brink in the twentieth century—the humpback whales’ comeback on our coast is a powerful reminder of how quickly we can make change when our values change.

We are so delighted for Maple Leaf Adventures community members The Marine Detective and Tavish Campbell—and their team at the Marine Education & Research Society—for their captivating contribution to the latest installment of the BBC Planet Earth III series, which aired on streaming services in Canada this Earth Day weekend. Episode 7 of Planet Earth III, titled "Human," features Vancouver Island, and it's a particularly hopeful story about animals adapting to how the natural world has changed.

This video, shot aboard Maple Leaf on Vancouver Island last summer—rings with the same sentiment, of how humanity can achieve the seemingly impossible when our priorities align with environmental stewardship. Happy from the coast! 🌎

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Open Ship event—our first since Cascadia's blessing ceremony, and certainly our biggest yet!

With the sun casting its golden glow upon the freshly-painted ships' hulls, we welcomed several hundred guests to step foot aboard the decks of Cascadia, Swell and Maple Leaf.

A special shout-out to our extraordinary crew, whose dedication, hospitality, and passion for coastal adventure set the stage for a remarkable guest experience.

With Swell off the dock for her first trip and Maple Leaf and Cascadia to follow, we hope to welcome you again on the wild west coast!

When people picture visiting Haida Gwaii, it’s the unroaded rainforest and legendary Haida village sites, that they imagine. To experience it, you have to travel by water…

If you tuned into Global News last night, you may have spotted a few familiar faces… Kevin and Maureen met with Jay Durant and his film crew at Shelter Island, and showed them around Swell and Maple Leaf, dry-docked for winter maintenance.

Learn a little about their decades-in-the-making story, and the expeditions Kevin led to give back to this pristine corner of the planet. Expeditions so successful, there’s plans to try and get the crew back together 🌎

A few photos from Maple Leaf and Swell with their dedicated crew looking after them in shipyard on the Fraser River. Unlike many companies, we own our own boats and pour love (and money) into them and the local industry to look after them. They’ll be around longer than us with this kind of care. ❤️❤️

"Commercial Bear Viewing Association Raises $300,000 (approx.) for Bear Conservation through Innovative Conservation Licence Fee"
We are incredibly proud to be part of this committed, change-making group of tour operators.
Not only did our industry play a huge part -- with a wide coastal community -- in ending the trophy hunt of grizzlies in BC, we have also, voluntarily, more than replaced any revenue government received from trophy hunt fees by self-imposing a conservation fee on ourselves for bear conservation (above and beyond what everyone already does, which is not insignificant). This is a milestone to celebrate!

Click the link below to read more about this incredible initiative and how our amazing members and guests and the role they play.

On this World Wildlife Day, we celebrate the diversity of wildlife on this coast -- it's so much more than bears and whales. Filmmakers Tavish Campbell (former Maple Leaf captain) and Deirdre Leowinata's 2023 reel shows this BREATHTAKING diversity ...enjoy! 🐟😍

(And yes, there are ever-present threats, too, and we're grateful to our community of people along the coast working to protect our ecosystems and create an economy that builds on conservation.)

“On our trips up and down the BC coast we’re so incredibly lucky to get the chance to see these amazing animals up close and personal. I remember even back when I began guiding in BC over a decade ago, coming across 14 or more bubble netting humpbacks or having to navigate between dozens of sleeping whales in a channel, wasn’t something that even happened, and now it’s a common occurrence. Thanks to conservation efforts and nature’s resilience we’ve seen a wonderful success story unfold before our very eyes, not just on our coast but around the world.” Jeff Reynolds Photography
