Happy Victoria Day! Itâs quite unusual to be living in a place that shares a name with a holiday (Saanich does have a Christmas Street and an Easter Street!). But why is Victoria called what it is? And why did Victoria Day come about?
The answer to both those questions is Queen Victoria. Her birthday, May 24, has been a national holiday in Canada ever since the year of her death, in 1901, when the federal government made it an official holiday called âVictoria Dayâ.
Victoria, BC, being settled in 1843, was named after the current Queen, Queen Victoria. There are other Victoriaâs, including in Australia, Manitoba and Hong Kong all established in the early to mid 19th century during Victoriaâs reign.
We hope you are using this Victoria Day to enjoy everything Victoria has to offer. If you are from elsewhere, we hope that when you get the chance to visit Victoria, you can learn a bit about the royal history of this fascinating, gorgeous city.

What a beautiful day here in downtown Victoria. The Springtide staff went on a stroll around the downtown area.
Some of us are new to Victoria and are still getting acquainted.
Becoming familiar with the downtown area is the first step to being a good tour guide at Springtide. Before going out on the ocean, learning about the land we live on matters too.
We asked a Victoria local from the Victoria pedi cab company to give us one reason why he loves Victoria and why it is a great place to visit. See what he had to say!
Shoutout to the Victoria Pedi Cab Company and thank you so much!
Why do you love Victoria?

CHECK THIS OUT: Chinook Salmon Enhancement Initiative
In 2016, the South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition, a community based volunteer initiative was set in motion. The project was dedicated to increasing the number of large adult Chinook Salmon in the Juan De Fuca Strait Provincial Park.
The project was strategically planned to not only increase the Chinook salmon population (that is on a rapid decrease) but to provide food for the endangered Southern resident killer whales. Chinook salmon makes up 80% of the southern resident killer whales diet (talk about a picky diet!)
Therefore, the salmon are a crucial element to their natural ecosystem that heavily impacts their survival.
Located in Sooke BC, the initiative is part of the âOrca Food Security Programâ. The project launched in collaboration with local whale watching companies (like Springtide and our very own Dan Kukat!) and supported by the local indigenous population.
How it works: The chinook salmon enhancement initiative operates by transporting little salmon smolts (salmon babies) into holding enclosures until they are big and strong enough to be released into the Sooke Basin and enjoy many years in the ocean. The goal is to enhance their chance at survival and increase their chances of returning to their Sooke River spawning grounds each year to re-establish their ecosystem in the years to come.
The amount of smolts transported from holding pens into the ocean in the last 5 years:
2016-2017: 220,000
2017-2018: 525,000
2018-2019: 530,000
2019-2020: 630,000
2020-2021: 530,000!!!
Swim free little friends and we hope to see you again!
BREAKING NEWS: Wildlife rescue outside the Springtide office!
Cuteness alert! This little gosling was found by Darcy's Pub staff underneath their patio. Poor little fella was making his way on to the busy road.
Luckily, two kind gentlemen from Victoria Animal Control Services came to the rescue and relocated our little friend to the Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre. Happy and heartwarming moment for all who were there to see it.
We hope this brightens up your day!
