Out at the Harrison Islands we have a hot spot for seal watching. On a sunny tour you can see them soaking up the sun and when it’s raining you can find them swimming around your kayak! Harbor seals have coats that vary in colour to help them blend into their surroundings, from silver-gray to brown or black and are often scattered with many fine to medium spots. Their coats provide excellent camouflage on pebbled beaches and rocky shores.

We can never get enough of these majestic birds. If you’re lucky (and quiet) they’ll pose for you to to capture a few photos out on the water. Did you know the Great blue heron stays cool in the summer by drooping and opening it’s wings to help air circulate and remove excess heat. I always thought they were just soaking up the sun! With an open beak it will also flutter it’s throat muscles to increase evaporation. Come see if you can spot a Great blue heron on one of our tours this season!

Job Description: We are currently seeking a certified sea kayak guide to join our team for the summer of 2024. Whether you're looking for full-time, part-time, or occasional opportunities, we welcome passionate individuals who are eager to share their love for kayaking with others. As a sea kayak guide with Kelp Reef, your responsibilities will include:
* Conducting 2-hour and 3-hour guided tours of Victoria Harbour
* Providing exceptional customer service to guests, ensuring their safety and enjoyment throughout the experience
* Assisting with the setup and cleanup of equipment before and after tours
* Demonstrating proficiency in kayaking techniques and environmental knowledge
* Working independently and collaboratively within a small team environment
* Maintaining equipment and ensuring its proper functionality
* Upholding company policies and safety protocols at all times
Qualifications:
* Certified sea kayak guide with relevant training and certifications
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
* Dependable and able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
* Ability to manage groups of varying sizes and skill levels
* Knowledge of local marine ecosystems and history is preferred

Welcoming Layla for her first summer at Kelp Reef! She’s been with us since the beginning of the season in our office setting up tours and giving people information. Layla is very knowledgeable about what all our tours offer and about tourism in Victoria. She has lots of experience with various water sports after working at a surf shop in Ucluelet last year and growing up sailing or canoeing among other water activities. We’ve loved getting her into kayaking now in Victoria! She is also running some of our social media this year and loves taking photos of the animals and for our guests on tours. It’s not too late to come see Layla to book your tour before the end of the season!

Welcome Inez! Inez is working on her second year as a kayak guide. She is a Biology graduate from the University of British Columbia, so she has an array of plant and animal facts up her sleeve. Inez is currently also guiding at the Vancouver Island Y Outdoors Centre for the summer season. She brings the fun on tours and is ready to make everyone’s day.

Pupping season is here! We are so exited every year to show off one of our cutest sights on the harbour. If you want to see these little guys the best time is for the next few weeks so make sure you don’t miss it! Did you know a female seal is pregnant for 11 months and has 1 pup every year?

On a day like today when it’s too windy to venture out of the harbour, The Gorge doesn’t disappoint! Featuring the beautiful Empress hotel during golden hour from one of our sunset tours. Did you know the Empress is a national historic site? The Empress and the Legislature are some of our favourite buildings to see from the harbour and we love getting a new perspective of downtown Victoria. Introducing our staff working on their first season with us at Kelp Reef! Robert has joined us for his 3rd year as a guide and is loving our part of the harbour. He has tons of info about the wildlife and the plants we see everyday and loves sharing it with our guests on tours. Even on our windiest days he still makes everything seem easy breezy lol. Our friends from the Warf, we have 3 river otters that regularly come and hang out with out staff right next to the dock! If you’re lucky you can come see these guys rolling around in the grass and playing together before your tour. Did you know River otters clean themselves after every meal? So cool!

Our guides are always trying to do their part to keep the Victoria harbour as clean as they can.
When ever they find any floating garbage on the water they bring it back to the dock to be disposed of properly!
