Embracing the Snowy Days on Cypress Mountain! ❄️🌲

We’re making the most of this winter wonderland with our Love The Land Tour on Cypress Mountain! This experience is more than just a snowshoe adventure—it’s a journey of connection, reflection, and deep respect for the land.

Following the Bowen Lookout Trail, we’ll trek through snow-covered forests, learning about Indigenous plant medicines, traditional knowledge, and the spiritual, cultural, and ecological significance of this land. At the lookout, we’ll pause to take in breathtaking views of our Coast Salish waters, enjoy warm tea, and share stories passed down through generations.

Join us in honoring the land, embracing its beauty, and carrying forward the teachings of sustainability and stewardship.

I found this article very insightful and knew but did not realise how much the extinction of birds in North America was an active practice of exterminating birds. It's a long read but worth it.

Whale Tales:

Sandy and Candy - January 1 2025
- we were at my house getting ready to go for a walk and all of a sudden
- "whales" Sandy shouted and we were in hot pursuit; we ran down to the marina and they passed through and so we got into the little lime green car (electric Kia) and ripped to Pebbles Beach on Sandy's suggestion where we discovered them again. The locals were doing their ocean swim and the sea lions and seals were swimming close to the ocean shore. I tried to get a video of the Killer Whales but could not find focus on my iPhone in time but knowing they are there is plenty awesome enough. I wondered if the stalashen were travelling or hunting or both and if there were any babies or youth in the pod. I hoped. In my excitement I didn't look to see if they were resident or transient. Not that I'm too confident in recognising these "distinct" features. From Pebbles we again hoped in the lime green Kia and zipped to Bonnie Brook beach were many locals were out enjoying the afternoon of good weather, picturesque clouds framing vancouver Island, and overall an incredible good start to January 1st 2025. We walked the beach and stopped to look West and see if we could see dorsal fins. We again saw sea lions, seals, cormorants and a cluster of birds further out but no fins. We said to each other, knowing those majestic beings, can dive deep, we told each other, they were diving past us, having somewhere to go. So we messaged our friends who were at the xwesam (Roberts Creek) Lantern event and told them to watch out for a family of stalashen (ocra) and they did. We later joined them and got to witness the lanterns launched, the intentions set (silently to ones self) and the collective community hoping for a better 2025.

With our friends Dale and Rt, we went to the gumboot and enjoyed salmon burgers and buddha bowls.

The first day of 2025 was capped off with a cup of tea, a session of "The Crown" and the sweet love of sleep. I love bed time. 2025, here you are. Art, Health, Family and Adventure. I'm ready!!

The Shishalh Nation is doing an exhibit on whales in 2025 and we are asking the community if you have Whale Tales to share 🐋💚
