Bushcraft Yukon

Winter came early this year to the Yukon. First snow hit the ground mid October and it hasn't really stopped snowing since. Little bit here and there, but we are definitely in full winter mode. Usually the weeks of late October and through November are a bit of a waiting game. Summer is over, but winter not quite here yet.

This year everything is different. The early snow allowed for winter pleasure like snowshoeing, skiing, dog mushing way earlier, while temperatures are nice and days still reasonably long. Perfect conditions for some fun outings!

I spent the last two days on a quick overnight trip near Whitehorse. Amazing views, Moose and Caribous encounters, great camp spot. Just a super fun little winter adventure to set the mood for the season!

Canoeing the Pelly River in the early fall has to be one of my favorite wilderness trips! Thousands of migrating cranes, spectacular fall colors, bears and moose and a wonderful mountain scenery...what's not to love?

Wildfires are a regular occurrence in Yukon's wilderness. As part of the natural cycle in the boreal forest lightning caused fires rejuvenate the woods by burning old fuels, fertilizing soil, heat activating seeds and spores and making room for young growth.

Paddling through active forest fires can be dangerous depending on conditions and it is crucial to know how to deal with the risks. On recent trips we had to paddle through a number of fires. In all cases cooler weather and sometimes rain helped to keep conditions reasonable and safe. Smoke was the biggest concern.

As sad as it is to see favorite campsites and beautiful landscapes go up in flames, it is equally fascinating to experience another force of nature from such close distance.

Just back from another wonderful canoe trip. The beautiful Teslin River provided once again! A great week with a good weather mix of pleasantly light rain and scorching sun. We turned our bounty of precious morels and the fresh catch of arctic graylings into delicious forest food. Enjoyed refreshing swims in the cold river, hiked to beautiful view points and soaked in the stunning wilderness of the Yukon! Thanks to Torben and Anja, Jens, Sebastian for a fun week!!!

The first canoe trip of the season under our belt! The Teslin River offers a beautiful multi-day wilderness trip in Canada's Northwest. Relaxed paddling, scenic campsites, good food, promising fishing, spectacular wildlife encounters...that's what it's all about on the Teslin!
This time around we chose a pick up by float plane from Hootalinqua with our friends at Aviation. An amazing pilot and beautiful weather made for a spectacular flight back to Whitehorse. What a treat!

What happens if the Bushcraft Yukon team goes on a pre-season-vaccation?
Follow us along on the beautiful Sunshine Coast Trail north of Vancouver, BC, Canada! We went for one week of backpacking on this beautiful hiking trail. Most of the trail is maintained by various volunteer groups, who do an amazing job of building and marking paths, bridges, and wonderful huts. No registration and booking required! Just show up and enjoy!
The Sunshine Coast Trail is no wilderness trail, but leads through a mix of old growth and forests of secondary growth. Every now and then there is even the opportunity to grab an amazing burger (shout out to the Shingle Mills Pub in Powell River)!

Taro is on fire! Ich hatte das große Vergnügen Taro Gehrmann von Swiss Bushcraft and Survival beim Bushcraft Jamboree 2024 in Deutschland zu treffen. Zum Glück konnte ich eines seiner Bücher ergattern. In den letzten Tagen habe ich mich begeistert durch sein Werk gearbeitet. Was für ein tolles Buch für alle Feuerteufel! Alle Fans von Lagerfeuern kommen hier auf ihre Kosten - egal ob Anfänger oder Profi! Taro gibt viele tolle Hinweise und hilft mit schönen Fotos Schritt für Schritt zum besseren Feuerstarten. Dabei ist alles einfach erklärt, ohne allzu komplizierte Ansätze. Eine klare Empfehlung für dieses tolle Buch!!!

Had a blast the last three days at the in Germany! So many outdoorsy bushcraft enthusiasts coming together to connect, make new friends and share their knowledge and skills at this unique event! A weekend full of presentations, workshops, instructions with amazing opportunities to also check in with some of the leading manufacturers of outdoor, bushcraft and survival gear!

Great line up of instructors and presenters: Susanne Williams, Reini Rossmann, Kyt Lyn Walken Allsopp, Jesper Hede, Pero Moeller, Taro Gehrmann...and so many more!

We shared a booth with our friend and collegue Jesper Hede from Bushcraft Europe. Thanks Jesper and Trine for making the trip from Denmark! Huge thanks to Niklas Schmidt for all the help with logistics and helping out at Jamboree! I really appreciate it!

My publisher Conrad Stein Verlag also supported us once again for this event. Thank you so much!

The Cottonwood Trail in Yukon's Kluane Nationalpark had been on our bucket list for a while. In March 2024 we finally managed to ski this amazing loop and enjoy the mountains at their best! Weather and snow conditions were just spectacular. Sunshine during the days, warmth to dry out gear in the afternoon, and cold nights to keep camping dry and firm up the snow for the next morning. Perfect! We took 5 days for this route, which kept it very enjoyable. We chose pulks over backpacks, which was a great decision. Check out the pictures! Enjoy!

Das Bushcraft Jamboree geht 2024 in die dritte Runde! Vom 3. - 5. Mai treffen sich Bushcraft-, Survival- und Outdoor-Begeisterte im Herzen Deutschlands. Es gibt Vorträge, Workshops, Lehrgänge, Tauschbörsen, Gewinnspiele und viele mehr!
