This looks so beautiful - we can't wait to see it all lit up! We were very happy to be able to support some initial electrical work for this installation through the Yukon 125 Fund and it's amazing to see the project completed. Congratulations to artist Jackie Olson and the Yukon Arts Centre!

The official reveal of Jackie Olson's LED installation, titled Yuhke, Baby Strap 2024, will be held at the opening reception for our new art exhibits by Olson, David Curtis, the Northern Fibres Guild and Riley Cyre on Thursday, Nov. 28, 5-7 pm. Come see the incredible variety of colours the installation will show.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the CMA as part of a coalition of national and provincial heritage organizations urges the Government of Canada to take immediate, decisive action to establish an Indigenous-led National Framework for Indigenous Cultural Heritage Rights. We do this to support the return of Indigenous ancestors and belongings through repatriation and to protect the rights of Indigenous peoples to their own cultural heritage.

We urge the Government of Canada to:
• Fulfill Canada’s commitments enshrined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (UNDRIP).
• Take urgent action. Despite Canada's commitment to UNDRIP, Action Plan Measure 98, which commits to co-developing a comprehensive approach for the repatriation of Indigenous Ancestors and Cultural Belongings, has not yet been started.
• Address the full spectrum of Indigenous cultural heritage rights through an Indigenous-led National Framework for Indigenous Cultural Heritage Rights.
• Release the funds requested in our pre-budget submissions to the Department of Finance, and the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance for initial research on repatriation scope and costs.

It's time for meaningful progress on Canada's UNDRIP obligations.

On August 16th, 1896, George Carmack, Kate Carmack, Skookum Jim Mason, and Dawson Charlie stumbled upon the mother lode rich deposits of precious Yukon gold. The news spread fast and hundreds of thousands of stampeders soon arrived to the Klondike in search of their own gold.

Today is a significant celebration for Yukoners in celebration and commemorates the first discovery of gold in Bonanza Creek (formerly called Rabbit Creek) and the set off the Klondike Gold Rush that led to the formation of the Yukon Territory. The Yukon Order of Pioneers, a fraternity of prospectors, encouraged the territorial council in 1911 to establish the holiday. The holiday originally fell on August 17 but is now the third Monday of that month. Festivities are centred in Dawson City, the epicentre of the gold rush, and each year tourists and Yukoners stampede there for what is now days of celebration and activities.

Terry Fox day is a celebration of a Canadian hero who embarked on a 143-day journey to raise awareness of cancer called the Marathon of Hope. He inspires and continues to inspire millions across the nation with his dedication, perseverance, compassion and kind-heartedness.

Terry Fox’s journey began in 1980 and covered 5,372 km. He was eventually forced to stop his Marathon of Hope in Thunder Bay Ontario when cancer had invaded his lungs. Schools across Canada do an annual Terry Fox Run to honour this remarkable individual whose legacy continues to embody the best of the human spirit, uniting people in a shared commitment to hope, resilience, and a quest for a world free from cancer.

Welcome to YHMA

The Yukon Historical & Museums Association was established in 1977 by a group of concerned and passionate individuals to create a united voice for understanding and promoting heritage and history in the Yukon. We keep apprised of issues and advocate on behalf of the Yukon’s heritage and heritage sector.

We continue to build a learning environment for history and culture and the development of skills and best practices in the heritage sector. We share knowledge with the Yukon heritage community and support each other in protection and conservation projects. Most of our activities are collaborations and partnerships. Many of our events and programs honour those in the heritage sector that are dedicated to our vision.

The YHMA is a territorially-incorporated Society and a federally registered charitable organization.

Our membership reflects the scope and diversity of the Yukon heritage community. Our institutional members include museums, First Nation cultural centres, historical societies, art galleries, archives, historic sites, science centres, zoos and nature reserves. Our individual members include museum employees, contractors and consultants, Board members and volunteers, and others actively involved in the heritage sector or who have an interest in heritage.
