State of Local Emergency Declared in Fairmont (posted: May 31.20 @5:03pm)

The RDEK has issued a State of Local Emergency for the community of Fairmont Hot Springs and a small number of homes along Fairmont Creek are being evacuated as heavy rainfall has increased the potential for a debris flow event.

“RCMP are assisting with a door to door tactical evacuation in a localized area along Fairmont Creek south of Marble Canyon,” explains Information Officer Loree Duczek. A reception centre has been set up at the Kanata Inn near the Crossroads/Tim Horton’s intersection in Windermere for evacuees.

“Our primary concern is the safety of residents. The heavy rainfall has resulted in flooding and debris on both Fairmont Creek and Cold Spring Creek and we are asking everyone to stay away from the creek banks and avoid any roads that are compromised by flood water,” adds Duczek.

Residents in the evacuation zone will be notified by RCMP, who are currently going door to door, and are asked to immediately leave the area and check in at the reception centre.

Declaring a state of local emergency enables the RDEK to exercise emergency powers under the Emergency Program Act as it responds to the flooding in Fairmont.

As this is a developing situation, more information will be provided as it becomes available.

Small Grass Fire Actioned in Fairmont This Afternoon (posted: Aug.7.18 5:34PM)

Members of the Fairmont Fire Department responded to a small grass fire in the Fairmont Area this afternoon.

“Residents in the area were knocking down the fire with hoses and extinguishers when we arrived on scene,” says Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Drew Sinclair. “Our firefighters were then able to fully soak the area to ensure hot spots were dealt with.”

Although the exact cause of the fire is under investigation, it is suspected to be the result of a faulty transformer. “While on scene, our firefighters heard a buzzing and snap sound from above and saw a spark from the transformer, which leads us to believe it was the cause of the fire,” adds Sinclair. BC Hydro is on scene this afternoon doing follow up.

“We appreciate the quick actions of the residents today,” says Sinclair. “In these extreme fire conditions, we urge the public to use extra caution, particularly around hydro poles or overhead lines.”

The call came in at 1:44 PM this afternoon.
