In 2021, more than 8.3 million people, or almost one-quarter (23.0%) of the population, were or have ever been a landed immigrant or permanent resident in Canada. This is the largest proportion since Confederation, topping the previous 1921 record of 22.3%, and the highest among the G7. Immigration is expected to continue to increase in the decades to come.
Over 1.3 million new or recent immigrants were permanently admitted from 2016 to May 2021, accounting for 15.9% of all immigrants living in Canada in 2021.
