The day was founded by Polar Bears International to coincide with the time period when polar bear moms and cubs are in their dens. Here are some other fun facts about polar bears and their young:

• While some female polar bears den on the ice, the predominant choice is onshore denning - where they dig into snow drifts to craft their shelter

• Polar bear cubs are some of the smallest mammals at birth relative to their mother

• Mother polar bears typically give birth to two cubs per litter. Cubs under a year old stay close to their mother, remaining still and watchful during her hunts

• After several months in the den, the new family emerges in mid-March
