In 1988 Gene became the first director of the Christian Peacemaker Teams, serving in that role until 2004.

Graduate of Goshen College and AMBS. While studying at AMBS, Gene met Dorothy Friesen. They married in 1975. In 1977, Gene and Dorothy moved to the Philippines where they served as MCC country co-directors. In 1981, Gene became director of the Urban Life Center in Chicago, while Dorothy served as director for Synapses, a human rights group they founded and operated from their home. In 1988 Gene became the first director of the Christian Peacemaker Teams, serving in that role until 2004. Quotable quote: "A good nonviolent action is like a great work of art."
