While you’re driving through the park this winter, keep your eyes open for caribou! 👀

A large group of caribou has been spotted this week on Highway 430 just south of Sally’s Cove, often walking on the roadway. They can blend in with the snow squalls, making them less visible to motorists. ❄️

For your safety and the survival of the caribou that call this area home, please slow down, stay alert and give wildlife the time and space to leave the roadway safely. 🦌

How to get ready for your hike

1. Pick your pals
To choose the right hike for you, first you need to decide on your hiking buddies. To pick a hike that will be fun for everyone, you need to know who is coming! Think about the age, abilities, and interests of your group.

2. Do your research
At pc.gc.ca/grosmorne you can find details on every attraction at the park. To pick the right trail for you, look at the descriptions of the trails that interest you. Think about: difficulty, distance, elevation, safety advisories, travel time, and seasonal weather.

3. Pick your adventure
You found a trail, now it's time to check out the conditions! Be prepared by familiarizing yourself with the route and where facilities like parking, bathrooms, and other amenities are. You can easily find all these details at pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/nl/grosmorne/activ/experiences/randonnee-hiking/etat-sentiers-trail-conditions!

4. Watch the weather
As your hike approaches, keep an eye on the skies! In Newfoundland, the weather is unpredictable and can have a big impact on your hike. If you’re heading up the slopes, changes in weather can be dangerous! Watch out for fog warnings, thunderstorms, rain, and overly high temperatures to keep safe and reschedule if needed.

5. Phone a friend
The next part of planning is letting someone know your plan: where and when you are going. Tell a trusted person when you leave so they can check in with you later and make sure you got back safe!

6. Get excited!
You've planned your hike! Now all that is left is packing your bag and picking your outfit! For tips on gear, grub, and safe Gros Morne hiking, read the rest of the Gros Morne Hiking 101 Guide!
