I am stuck!

When I decided to go on this village boat, I knew I will get stuck. I told them, you are coming for this adventure, mind that you will be somehow stuck, I won’t be responsible of any of the problems. We all go on it, we move together, we get stuck and we survive it it all.

Now we are here in Kwamouth, our 4th boat break. A place famous for deadly militia and beautiful people, peaceful water and giant tiger fish. We all need to leave here, but how? I told you, don’t ask me how many days we going to spend on this river, it is longer than my imagination, its rapids stronger than any boat engine….

I told Michał and Dodo, two polish intrepid travelers that I am not responsible of this, eat those random cassava leaves, that baby fish, drink that colorful river water and most importantly I don’t know where the toilet is, don’t ask me where to get Margarita Pizza… I am stuck!I

QUITO CUANAVALE…

This is where the World Cold War made its most brutal clashes…. Here the Angola army( MPLA) with the direct support of their communist allies defeated UNTA of Savimbi and his pro-apartheid troops supporters( US, South Africa, Germany and…)

This beautiful massive country is now a ruin, the scars of the war are still fresh on its inhabitants faces.

A road trip to this depth is an unforgettable learning journey. A bunch of scratches left on the battlefield slap your eyes on your way to the famous SAVIMBI headquarters….welcome to QUITOS CUANAVALE. #

Mambo from Nairobi Kenya: Kumbukumbu community is growing, happy to show you Keria and his brother as part of our team on the noth-west corridor of Kenya.
Responsible tourism has taught us to grow with the community, that you cannot sell Masai Mara without Masai people.

Believe me, beyond the academic skills, these people know how to deal with their savanna animals even the most behaving species like hynas and black mambas…

Today I leave Kenya to Luanda via Doha with a big community of assistants from all our destinations and expeditions going going on in , , are all going well.

This was just a dream few years ago😭😭

08/04/2023

Yesterday, 7 April 2023, Rwanda marked 29 years since the start of the genocide in Rwanda, a deliberate, intentional, and systematic mass-killing, which targeted the Tutsi population. The genocide lasted for about 100 days, and approximately one million Tutsis as well as politically moderate Hutu and Twa men, women and children were murdered.

After the genocide ended in July 1994, Rwanda was a devastated country. Its basic infrastructure was destroyed, millions of people were displaced, and many surviving Tutsis had lost their families. Many women suffered the consequences of r**e and sexual violence. Thousands of children were orphaned and had to fend for themselves. Countless survivors developed long-term psychological problems.

However, over time Rwanda has rebuilt itself and survivors have played an important role in its development. Many have showed great resilience; remade their lives, formed survivor support groups, and even created and preserved memorial sites across the country, educating future generations about the dangers of extremism and hate.

Kwibuka means “To remember”. We remember and honour the memory of the more than one million victims and pay tribute to the strength and courage of the survivors.

28/02/2023

Despite expanding wardrobes and pressure from Kampala to join the modern world, most rural karamojong remain true to their traditional way of life. Communities still commonly inhabit manyattas: traditional homesteads in which concentric, defensive rings of thorny brushwood’s surround a central compound containing huts, granaries and cattle pens. Unlike the rest of Uganda, some semblance of cultural dress remains part of everyday attire. For men this is epitomized by the cloak and some form of western hat with ostrich feathers added to indicate status. Though the great beaded ruffs of yesteryear are less common, neck beads remain very much in vogue with the ladies.

——————————————————-

Our travel experiences are infused with community tourism because it’s the best way to break down barriers to engage communities in meaningful, life changing ways.
When we travel to Kidepo Valley National Park, we also visit the Karamojong villages (manyattas) located near this national park. Here you will meet the Karamojongs, a proud and fierce group of semi nomadic pastoralists with a rich cultural heritage. The Karamoja region is like the Wild West of Uganda. It is pretty much unspoiled and unvisited but there is gradual development happening. Road improvements have made access to the area easier and there are chattered flights to Kidepo which make the park more accessible to tourists.

This large antelope with its striking appearance of long horns and distinct colouration is the national animal of Namibia. The Oryx, also known as the Gemsbok, occurs in the more arid regions throughout the African continent where it feeds on course grasses and thorny shrubs often during the morning and late afternoon.

Having successfully adapted to harsh conditions where scarce water and intense heat are the norm, it is no surprise that this large mammal has solidified itself as the country’s national animal. The Oryx was chosen as Namibia’s national animal due to its courage, elegance and pride with the national coat of arms bearing this unmistakable dweller of the desert.

𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙊𝙧𝙮𝙭 𝙞𝙣 𝙉𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙖?

Namibia is one of the best places to experience Oryx, the current Oryx population in Namibia is believed to be 373,000. These large antelopes have adapted to many environments that most large mammals are unfit to live in. They are so prevalent in Namibia that you will likely spot them alongside the road all over the country. Seeing them in the dunes at Sossusvlei against the backdrop of the rising sun, however, is especially memorable. Keep an eye out for the characteristic large hoofed tracks on the soil. During the day, the animal will rest in the shade to escape the heat. If there is no shade available, the antelope will position itself in a manner to expose as little as possible of its body surface to the sun.

Insecurity aside, the biodiversity in the Democratic Republic of Congo🇨🇩 is second to none in Africa.

Congo has rare species like the Okapi, bonobos, mountain and Eastern lowland gorillas. The okapi, sometimes referred to as a forest giraffe or Okapia johnstoni is a strange looking creature with markings that are similar to that of zebras.

What is amazing about the Okapi is that they are more related to giraffes and were only discovered in 1901 at the Virunga National Park. It is only found in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Ituri forest and Virunga National Park.

There are an estimated 5,000 in the Okapi Wildlife reserve alone. Most of them are found in Ituri forest and a few in Virunga National Park.

Since their official protection in 1933, the Okapi are now classified and listed by the Institute in Congo for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN) as endangered. This new classification is because of their declining numbers in the last 20 years.

The government of Congo has selected the Okapi as a national symbol of wildlife conservation and appears in many national emblems.

Best time to travel 🧳
The Okapi Wildlife Reserve is technically opened for visitors throughout the year but the dry seasons between June and August is perfect for visiting.

Their eyes shining and their guns slung casually over their shoulders, Ethiopia's Dassanech people are conducting a ceremony to finalize a peace agreement between two of the warring clans that share their homeland, a fertile stretch that runs alongside the Omo River in southern Ethiopia.
But this is no ordinary peace ritual. For the Dassanech, the high point of the ceremony comes when they slice open the stomach of a freshly-slaughtered cow and cover themselves in a smelly mixture of poo and stomach juices.
And as Eric Lafforgue, the photographer who captured these incredible images, reveals, not a single person is excused from the ritual - however little they might like it and however old they might be.

It walks with grace and serenity, as though the life of the country it symbolises, depends on its every step. The Crested Crane – chosen as Uganda’s Crest (national symbol) nearly 100 years ago, is one of the most cherished birds in the country.

The unusual gracefulness of the Crowned Crane, aptly typifying the country and its people, attracted then Governor of Uganda -Sir Frederick Jackson who, in 1893, chose it to embellish the Union Jack with its exquisite form and heraldic dignity.

The Crane is definitely an object of great beauty. It is a tall bird standing well over three feet, on long-slender black legs. Its neck is almost as long as its legs and towards the base, pointed pearl-grey feathers are elongated to form an ornamental fringe.

The tail feathers, comparatively short, are the colour of dried straw. When at rest, the Crowned Crane seems to be enveloped in a cape of exquisite delicacy with its multi-coloured head where the three colours of the Uganda’s Flag (Black, Yellow, Red) seem to be represented. The conspicuous velvety black forehead, yellowish crest and the vivid bright red wattles, make the Crested Crane an elegant creature, befitting its emblematic role.

There are 16 different species of Cranes in the world, four of which are found in Africa, including the ‘great’ Grey Crowned Crane, the Uganda national symbol.

The Donga/Stick Battle in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley

One of the main Surma / Suri customs is stick fighting. This ritual and sport is called Donga or Sagenai (Saginay). Donga is both the name of the sport and the stick, whereas sagenai is the name of the stick-fighting session.

Stick fighting is central in Suri culture. In most cases, stick fighting is a way for warriors to find girlfriends, it can also be a way to settle conflicts. On this occasion men show their courage, their virility and their resistance to pain, to the young women.

Most of fighters use no protection at all and fight completely naked in order to show their bravery. They also wear strings of decorative coloured beads around their necks given by the girls and waist, but their ge****ls are most of the time uncovered and they are barefoot.

The fights are really violent, and it is quite usual to see men bleeding. Stick fighting has proven to be dangerous because people have died from being hit in the stomach. Loosing an eye or a leg during the fight is quite common, although it is strictly forbidden for a fighter to kill his opponent, and if a fighter gets killed during the fight, his opponent and all his family are banned from the village for life.

At the end of the fights, the winners point their ph***ic sticks in direction of the girls they want to date with, if the girl put a necklace around the stick, it means she is willing to date the champion.

15/10/2022

The Maasai people of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania know how to make the most of their cattle. They incorporate milk into meals, enjoy raw and cooked beef, use cowhides for bedding and dung to strengthen walls, and regularly consume cow’s blood.
Both blood and milk are consumed during rituals and celebrations, such as weddings, but also serve as regular sources of calories and nutrients.

Elders who’ve had a rough night might reach for a cup to sober up or reduce the intensity of hangovers. They may drink fresh, warm blood straight after it’s drawn, use it as an ingredient in cooked dishes, or mix it with milk. Some describe it as sweet and thick, with a film that forms over the surface just seconds after collection.

In order to maximize the amount of blood each cow can produce, Maasai men don’t slaughter their cows during the bloodletting. Instead, a group holds an animal down as one man nicks its jugular (typically via an arrow shot at close range) once a month. They catch the blood in a clay pot or calabash (bottle gourd) below the incision, then quickly clot the wound once the vessel is full. Smearing mud or hot ash over the cut to stop the bleeding, and the animal lives to see another day.

Since cattle play a key role in Maasai culture, they are also  a status symbol. Herd size dictates social standing, and collecting cattle is common practice. Keeping these animals alive and well provides the dairy and blood that fortifies Maasai herders and their families, both physically and culturally.

Would you drink blood? Cow’s blood?🩸
