'Philip Williams Posters' has piles and piles of posters to look through and prices range from $15 to thousands of dollars. There are even some prints from the 1600's. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Indoors Edition. Today: Dream House. A minimalist art experience, this version of the 'Dream House' was created in 1993 as an experiment with sound and light design. The space is supposed to give a calming, relaxing space amidst the chaos of the city. Unfortunately, in the last year its existence is threatened because of inability to pay rent during the Pandemic. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Indoors Edition. Today: Mystery Bookstore. No, this isn't an active crime scene, just part of a book store which focuses exclusively on mystery and crime novels. It's one of the oldest mystery bookstores in the US and features the largest collection of Sherlock Holmes titles (as well as "Sherlockiana" - the fandom and study of Holmes) in the world. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Outdoors Edition. Today: National Monument. Many NYers are unaware that Tribeca contains an official National Monument. The African Burial Ground Monument recognizes the burial of over 15,000 Africans in New York (almost entirely enslaved people) in this area. This was due to a law passed in 1697 in the city where no one of African-descent would be allowed to be buried within the the city limits and this location was not yet part of the official city. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Outdoors Edition. Today: Jenga Building. Most visitors comment that the building resembles the skill game 'Jenga.' Built in 2017, '56 Leonard Street' is the tallest building in Tribeca and was designed off of the concept of 'houses stacked into the sky.' One of the most protected skyscrapers in the world, the AT&T Long Lines building was built in 1974 to survive two weeks on its own after a nuclear blast. Briefly threatened with closure in 2011, a support campaign lead by Steve Buscemi (a trained NYC fire fighter in the 80s) raised enough funds to keep it in service. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Midtown. Today: 'WHAT PARTY.' That's the title of a new sculpture from local artist KAWS, unveiled in August of 2020. He's known best for his reappropriation of pop culture icons like Mickey Mouse. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Midtown. Today: 6 1/2 Ave. Maybe reminiscent of 'Being John Malkovich' with its fictional 7 1/2 floor, 6 1/2 Avenue is very real. This was installed in 1980 and the board replays famous matches from history with one move a week each Wednesday, moved by the building concierge in a cherrypicker. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Whisper Gallery. Bury your head into one of these corners and talk and your voice will travel to the opposite end like you were standing right next to the person. This feature wasn't done intentionally, but happens because the unique "Guastavino" tiles are so tightly set together there is no where else for the sound to go except to the opposite end. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Graybar Rats. Just outside GCT you'll find an odd sculpture at the Graybar Building, rats climbing up the posts. The posts are supposed to depict mooring lines on a ship, tying it to harbor. Cones were used to stop rats from entering the ship before the ship launched. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Backwards Ceiling. The ceiling of the station features paintings of 12 zodiac constellations - but they were painted backwards by accident. Noticed by a random commuter a few months after the station opened, it was eventually corrected but Orion was still facing the wrong direction. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Ginormous Statues. At the time this was unveiled in 1914, the statues at GCT's entrance were the largest statue group in the world. Though it may not seem like it from a distance, together they weigh over 1,400 tons. Proud of GCT's status as one of the world's first all-electric buildings, Cornelius Vanderbilt made sure to highlight its chandeliers. Look closely and on many of them you'll find acorn symbols. In 1980, experimental filmmaker Bill Brand was allowed to install an art installation part of the Subway. Using slits cut at specific times looking at lighted backdrops, it gives the feel of an early motion picture predecessor.
