Samar and Sudhamrita’s Japan Diaries:

The day started early, with Samar and Sudhamrita hopping on a bus to the Lake Kawaguchi region, crossing their fingers for the weather gods to cooperate. Turns out - they did more than just cooperate! A stunning day ensued, with almost uninterrupted views of Mount Fuji. After the picture perfect shots at Chureito Pagoda, it was time to enjoy a leisurely day soaking in the natural beauty of Lake Kawaguchi and the Oishi park along its banks.

A few months from now, the park and surrounding area will be filled with cherry blossoms, azaleas, roses and many more flowers, but today’s fiery autumn leaves (and a few remarkably hardy flowers) certainly made a big impression. All in all - a day well spent under the serene gaze of Fuji-san!

As “The Beast from the East”, cold winds from Siberia that’s storming Europe at the moment, continues to keep mercury in sub-zero limits (starting with -10C in the morning) - it was time for another walk in the winter sun. Of course, some of it is necessitated by the regular ferrying of the kids to their extra curricular classes despite the weather (talk about character building at an early age), but I would rather feel the weather (and the town) than waiting grumpily for the classes to get over.
Today’s highlight was the frozen Tinguely fountain that stands at the site of the old Basel Theater, featuring nine iron figures in constant motion and conversation with each other - like the mime artists, actors and dancers that once occupied the stage that stood in this spot. Cold winds don’t spare even the Iron figures, but of course the true artists still don’t give up (check the video) - that’s some dramatics in action.
And, the basel old town has many of my favorites, the old brewery of the original Feldschlossen beer in Switzerland, narrow pedestrian streets, original swiss chocolates by Läderach, the dollhouse museum - one of its kind in Europe and a must visit for the kids, the iconic red building of the Rathaus (Basel Municipal office) from 15th century that never fails to charm you, AND one of the best street art from Basel - of the famous musicians.
