Satish and Archana Pashine are some of the most intrepid travellers you are likely to come across - and were all set for their nearly month long adventure in Australia and New Zealand. While Mr. Pashine's style is all about clock-work precision and planning, in reality, travel throws up a few curveballs that forces one to step out of the comfort zone.

So, when their first couple of days in New Zealand were marred by a rainstorm and landslides, leading to declaration of emergency in the region - we had to think on our feet...! No broken bridges or cancelled helicopter rides were going to dampen the spirits, and they ended up having the best time, going with the flow.

There is a small mountain town in Japan, where you can see a volcanic valley with active sulphur vents, Mount Fuji reflected in the serene waters of a lake, Italian glass art, relax in onsens and soak in art from Monet and Picasso - all within about 50 square kilometres.

Do you know the name of this mountain retreat that is a little over an hour from Tokyo?

Tower, tower, which tower do you choose?

Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree and Shibuya Sky - there's no doubt you've heard of these observation decks, offering breathtaking views over the city and thrilling rides up to get those birds eye views. Tokyo Skytree offers the highest views and a futuristic vibe but can be crowded and pricey. Tokyo Tower charms with its retro, iconic design and nighttime glow, though it’s less panoramic. Shibuya Sky boasts a modern open-air deck and stunning photos but usually involves painfully long queues, even with pre-booked tickets.

We would like throw in another contender - the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Huh? A government building? You may scoff, but this humble (243 metres tall) building offers not only panoramic views from its observation deck, but also puts on an impressive and trippy light show on its building every 30 minutes from 7 - 9 PM. And it's all free!

Mount Fuji is far more than Japan’s tallest peak; it’s a deeply revered symbol woven into the fabric of Japanese culture. Sacred in Shinto and Buddhist traditions, it represents rebirth and immortality, drawing pilgrims to its summit for centuries. Artists have immortalized its beauty, making it a timeless muse in Japanese art and literature. Recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, Mount Fuji embodies Japan’s spiritual and artistic soul, standing as a source of inspiration and national pride.

Where best to see Mount Fuji, you ask?

Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchiko)
One of the Five Fuji Lakes, offering stunning reflections of Fuji on calm days. Don't miss the panoramic views from the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway!

Chureito Pagoda
An iconic viewpoint with Fuji framed by a five-story pagoda and seasonal cherry blossoms or autumn leaves.

Hakone (Ashinoko Lake)
Relax in a hot spring (onsen) while soaking in views of Fuji across Lake Ashi. The Hakone Shrine torii gate creates a picturesque photo spot.

Gotemba Peace Park
A serene location with Buddhist stupa, offering panoramic views of Fuji. Best enjoyed in spring when cherry blossoms bloom!

Fuji Shibazakura Festival (April-May)
Witness vibrant pink moss fields in bloom, creating a striking foreground for Mount Fuji during spring.

Looking to explore Kyoto like a pro?
1️⃣ Start Early for Tranquility
Beat the crowds by visiting iconic spots like the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove or Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) at sunrise. Early mornings offer magical light for photos and serene vibes.
2️⃣ Stay in a Ryokan or Machiya
Immerse yourself in Kyoto’s heritage by staying in a traditional inn (ryokan) or a renovated machiya townhouse.
3️⃣ Take the Scenic Routes
Explore Kyoto’s beauty on foot or by bike. Walk the Philosopher's Path during cherry blossom season or rent a bike to ride along the Kamogawa River. Kyoto’s layout is perfect for slow travel!
4️⃣ Seek Hidden Temples
Skip the crowds by visiting lesser-known spots like Shisen-dō (a stunning garden retreat) or Komyō-in Temple, known for its peaceful Zen rock garden.
5️⃣ Embrace Seasonal Delights
Kyoto’s charm changes with the seasons:
🍁 Autumn: Tofuku-ji Temple is a hidden foliage wonder.
🌸 Spring: Nishijin Textile Center’s cherry blossoms are an underrated gem.
❄️ Winter: Visit Kifune Shrine for a snow-covered fairytale setting.
6️⃣ Explore Traditional Arts
Attend a tea ceremony in Uji (home of the best matcha), or take a Kyo-Yuzen silk dyeing workshop to create your own wearable memory.
7️⃣ Enjoy Kyoto Cuisine
Try seasonal kaiseki dining or grab a local favorite, yatsuhashi sweets, from Nishiki Market. For the best ramen, head to Kyoto's famed Menbaka Fire Ramen for a fiery spectacle!
8️⃣ Use the Kyoto Bus Pass
Kyoto's buses are the easiest way to reach most temples and districts. A one-day pass costs only ¥700 and saves you from repeatedly purchasing tickets - or just use your SUICA or Pasmo card!

Samar and Sudhamrita’s Japan Diaries:

Of the many day trips that can be taken from Kyoto, the one to Hiroshima and Miyajima is one the most picturesque and memorable ones. While both locations easily merit a full day on their own, Samar and Sudhamrita's willingness to start early and make the most of the day meant that they could get a taste of both!

Miyajima is an island off mainland Japan, and between the unique shrines, local shops and delicacies, and the wild deer (yes, it's not just Nara!) that have free reign over the town, there’s a lot to see. Once they had their fill of Miyajima, it was time to take the ferry back and head to Hiroshima. The Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima is of course, an important element of the trip, reminding all visitors of the destruction the bomb caused. The Dome is now preserved to promote peace and warrants some moments of sombre reflection.

All in all, it's a long travel day, but totally worth it to experience both the iconic destinations and reflect on the juxtaposition of unbelievable beauty and destruction.

Samar and Sudhamrita’s Japan Diaries:

No trip to Kyoto is complete without a quick visit to Nara. The star attractions of Nara are the adorable (and well mannered) deer that bow down to visitors in exchange for treats. An early start is ideal, as you don't want the deer to get too well fed - and tired from all the bowing! Samar and Sudhamrita got to Nara from Kyoto bright and early, and were rewarded with some quality time with the deer.

There's plenty more to see in Nara - so they headed out to the stunning Isuien gardens, made especially gorgeous in the autumn colours. Of course, no visit would be complete without a stop at Todai-ji, one of Japan's most historically and culturally significant temples. Aside from being steeped in history, its sheer scale is enough to impress most visitors to this 8th century marvel.

There was only one way to wrap up the special day in Nara - and that was with a return journey that was just as memorable as the visit itself. By special request, we secured seats on the new Aoniyoshi sightseeing train for their return journey - and the stylish, comfortable interiors did not disappoint!

Samar and Sudhamrita’s Japan Diaries:

The day was spent exploring Kyoto's offerings in Arashiyama and Higashiyama. From the stunning Okochi Sanso gardens to the atmospheric Tenryuji temple, Arashiyama has endless opportunities for marveling at the beauty of nature - and not to mention the infamous bamboo forest too! Seeing the five-storied To-ji temple illuminated at night was a true treat, and the day ended at an impressive count of 28,000 steps.. a true testament to Samar and Sudhamrita's intrepid natures! The best part? The stunning autumn foliage - take a look for yourselves and see if you can resist booking your next autumn trip to Japan ;)

Samar and Sudhamrita’s Japan Diaries:

It’s time to say goodbye to Hakone and hello to Kyoto!

Samar and Sudhamrita embarked excitedly on a train journey to Kyoto, via Odawara. The day was made even more special by their anniversary, which they celebrated in style in Kyoto. There wasn’t much on the agenda other than indulging in food and drinks - and Kyoto has plenty to offer in that regard. Particularly memorable was the 100 year old teahouse with stunning garden views and perfectly delicate mochi sets. The serene zen atmosphere was a perfect introduction to Kyoto - and certainly, the best spot to celebrate love and togetherness!

Samar and Sudhamrita’s Japan Diaries:

It's time to head out of the city! Samar and Sudhamrita left Tokyo with heavy hearts, having fallen in love with the vibrant city. However, a new adventure awaited in Hakone.

Over the next two days, they explored the beautiful mountain town of Hakone, diving into the spectacular natural beauty of the region. They arrived and headed straight to the onsen - the healing hot springs are the perfect way to unwind, especially after experiencing the frenetic pace of Tokyo.

The next day was spent indulging in all Hakone has to offer - from the serene Lake Ashi boat cruise, to admiring Monet and Picasso's works in the stunning outdoor museum, it's a treat for all the senses. The Hakone ropeway is also quite the experience - taking visitors to the smouldering Owakudani volcanic region.

Blessed with perfect weather and views, Samar and Sudhamrita breathed in all the magic of Hakone, before setting off to Kyoto.. the next adventure begins!
