He performed Prokofiev concerto No. 2 at the final stage with Maestro Kwang-Hyun Kim.

Watch Sung Ho's music and read his interview together!🤩

💡Can you share your most memorable moment from the competition?
One of the most memorable moments from the competition was definitely performing in the Final Round, playing Prokofiev Second Concerto with the Hankyung Arte Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Kwang-Hyun Kim. It was my very first time performing the entire concerto with an orchestra, and it was absolutely unforgettable!
This concerto has always been one of my favorite concertos. It’s such a powerful masterpiece—so emotional, heartbreaking, filled with tragedy, escapism, and fantasy. Bringing this monumental work to life on stage, alongside such an incredible conductor and orchestra, felt truly special. It was absolutely inspiring, and an experience I’ll treasure for a long time!

💡What was the most challenging part of the competition, and how did you overcome it?
Compared to other competitions, the Seoul International Music Competition required contestants to play numerous pieces across a wide range of repertoire throughout the four stages, including commissioned works and a concerto with orchestra. Though handling the vast amount of repertoire—over 3 hours—was quite demanding, it was a valuable opportunity to explore such diverse repertoire. It also served as a great chance to handle many different works altogether essential for life as a concert pianist.
Another challenging part was dealing with nerves, but I focused on thinking of it as a concert for the audience rather than a competition, which helped me relax, fully express myself, and enjoy the music I created.

💡How did participating in the competition contribute to your development as a musician?
Winning competitions isn't what matters to me. What I always focus on is achieving musical growth through the entire competition process. Preparing for a competition and performing on stage have helped me spot my weaknesses and discover endless spaces for growth within myself.
After countless hours of practice, I believe musicians grow most significantly through 'real' stage experience. At a certain level, it is not just about practicing hard—it is about presenting the music constantly you’ve poured your heart and effort into directly to an audience. For me, participating in competitions has always been about creating opportunities to challenge myself, keep developing, and perform. Each stage experience has taught me to stay focused on the music and myself, adapt to the unexpected, and gain specific lessons that only live performance—not the practice room—can offer. By doing this, I’ve found myself growing far more than I could have ever imagined, becoming a much better musician than I was before.

💡What kind of repertoire or collaborations do you wish to explore in the future?
The piano repertoire is incredibly vast, and I always strive to learn and perform as much of it as I can. I find great joy in studying the underrepresented eras or repertoire, works from the Second Viennese School and contemporary music, for instance, and sharing them with the audience.
Recently, I’ve also become more interested in studying composers I haven’t focused on as much before, like Bach and Schubert. Additionally, I’m always excited about opportunities for collaboration—whether playing chamber music or performing concertos with orchestras. Working alongside other amazing musicians is something I truly value and really look forward to!

💡Do you have any pre-concert rituals or routines?
Nothing special, just trying to sleep well and focus on myself and the music itself!

💡Do you have any advice for young musicians who aspire to participate in international competitions?
I would recommend approaching competitions not as a race to win, but as an international festival where you can learn from other musicians from all over the world, share musical inspiration with them, and ultimately focus on self-improvement. This perspective helps avoid burnout and encourages genuine musical development.
Dive deep into the music itself, and if you focus on learning and growing through the process, you’ll find a sense of accomplishment in the journey that goes beyond the result. This mindset will allow you to approach competitions in a healthy way for the long term. It’s important to remember that our music careers don’t end in our twenties. Competitions are just a small part of a much longer musical journey!

Congratulations, Sung Ho!🎉
