Out of Africa. Segera, a wildly luxurious retreat.
Our latest feature contribution to the Hamaji Magazine.

'An oasis of luxury set against the foothills of Mount Kenya, Segera Retreat is home to conservation, community and culture. Its thatched villas, eccentric towers and living cactus boma are set within a garden rich with hummingbirds and sculptures. A place with thriving wildlife that reminds you to tread gently on the land, while refuelling your creative energy.'

Zanzibar’s Stone Town.

Steeped in history with a maze of narrow cobblestone alleyways lined by shophouses, bazaars and mosques, too narrow for cars they are often crowded with bicycles and pedestrians. As you explore you’ll be captivated by the intricately carved wooden doors and barazas - a long bench along the outside wall, large verandas and heady aroma of spice on the air.

Known as the Spice Islands, Zanzibar offers numerous attractions, including tours of the islands which are known to produce aromatic clove, nutmeg, cardamom, turmeric, cinnamon, chilli, and black pepper.

You’ll want to stock up and take a piece of the island home with you. Contact us for details or assistance with your visit, we highly recommend that you visit Stone Town while in Zanzibar, be it for a night or even on a day trip.

AMADI currently has clients at Mnemba Island Lodge, and we do admit to being just a little jealous, although of course delighted that they are there hlapping up the warm weather, waters and spoils.

An exclusive and private destination just 4,5 km off the northeast coast of Zanzibar, Mnemba Island is surrounded by the azure blue Indian Ocean. With just 10 woven-palm-mat bandas, this is exclusivity personified - matched by service, soul-enriching water sports, diving, beautiful food and time simply escaping the world ...

This East African safari destination with its seemingly endless open plains is the ultimate definition of the African wilderness, more specifically the iconic savanna. Expect to be enchanted by miles of grasslands speckled with acacia trees and rich in wildlife.

Divide your time between the Grumeti and the Serengeti as you follow the migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra. Savour the views from above the Ngorongoro Crater. Visit with nomad tribes and with the revered Maasai. Linger on the shores of Lake Manyara, which is coloured pink by flamingo.

After the safari, a blissful beach break in Zanzibar will round off your trip perfectly. Take a look at our destination details https://www.amadi.travel/destinations/tanzania and be in touch if we can assist with more information.

Nothing like some ocean blues, to combat the blues ...

The Zanzibar Archipelago off the coast of Tanzania is an ideal destination to fuel the soul as you drift onboard a traditional dhow on waters that have seen adventurers, seafarers, pirates and traders for centuries.

Known as the spice island, the air is heady with wafts of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. Remote, romantic and replenishing, it beckons.

Over the holidays, AMADI's Raphael Curiger spent a few blissful days in the Matetsi Private Game Reserve.

Highly acclaimed for distinctly African contemporary interiors, Matetsi Victoria Falls is very much in keeping with its natural surrounds with polished earth finishes, lustrous hand-beaten local copper detail, and seamless flows between interior and exterior living spaces.

The theme 'Life on the River', conceptualised by their Zimbabwean architectural designer, comes through subtly with clay-pot downlighters, fish-trap inspired features and custom works by local artisans.

Set on the vast 136,000-acre Matetsi Private Game Reserve, the lodge offers a truly exclusive safari experience in the heart of the KAZA transfrontier conservation area with morning and evening game drives, canoeing on the Zambezi River as well as optional walking safaris.

If you'd like more details or are interested in booking, do be in touch at [email protected]. We'd love to help plan your visit the AMADI way.

Recognising Travel as a Force for Good.

We are ending the year on the right note as AMADI joins The Conscious Travel Foundation as one of the first members of their Collective.

At AMADI we believe in conscious sustainable tourism that celebrates the uniqueness of Africa’s people, cultures and ecosystems. This means that when designing journeys we always consider the carbon footprint of our travellers as well as the impact their journeys have on the destinations and communities they visit.

AMADI Is therefore perfectly aligned to The Conscious Travel Foundation and their mentors, and we look forward to the positive influence this collective of like-minded operators will have on the industry in 2021.

South Africa's Western Cape is one of the richest for plant biodiversity with over a third of the world's plant species occurring in what is known as the Cape Floral Kingdom, a thin strip of vegetation that runs from Cape Town along the coast towards the Eastern Cape.

Incredibly, about 70% of these 9600 plant species grow nowhere else on Earth. This botanical wonderland is dominated by the Proteaceae, Ericaceae, Restios and Asteraceae families - some photos here.

We took a closer look at them while visiting at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. A custodian of a floral reserve where they can be viewed on one of their 4x4 safaris. |

One of the great privileges of travel is the opportunity to witness and be humbled by the instinctive behaviour and capacity of animals in their natural environment.

The annual wildebeest migration, the largest animal migration in the world, sees two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate in a clockwise direction across the ecosystems of the Serengeti in Tanzania, and the Masai Mara in Kenya each year, and a sight to behold.

Referred to as the Thundering Hooves, the herds arrive on the plains, driven forward by the rains, eating the fresh green shoots to regain their strength, mating - with the culminating as the breeding herds pause to welcome their offspring.

And once the young are strong enough, they will set off again ...

The pic was taken in Tanzania as the herds arrived kicking dust into the air. Mail us at [email protected] for help planning a trip to see them.

'Legendary Expeditions in Tanzania’s Mwiba Wildlife Reserves'

We so appreciate being able to share stories from our favourite African destinations with Hamaji Magazine and their readers. In the latest edition, we contribute a feature article in their Out Of Africa section, highlighting the soulful Mwiba Lodge and Mila Tented Camp.

'Hosting only a handful of guests at a time enables the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve to offer an excellent, soulful safari experience within the greater Serengeti eco-system. A conservation concession dedicated to the imperative balance between wildlife and communities, and how the vast and vivid natural beauty of Tanzania enchants travellers, captivating them with its untouched expanses, diversity of wildlife and vibrant cultures.'

A True Wilderness next to the Serengeti National Park.

Captivating the essence of the reserve.

What we like about Legendary Expedition's Mwiba Lodge and Mila Tented Camp is that they are situated on community-owned land, which means that each guest we book there naturally contributes towards the surrounding community.

A visit also affords the unique opportunity to spend time with two of the four resident tribes - the Hadzabe, D’atoga, Maasai and Sukuma - in order to gain insight into their intriguing daily lives.

An honest and humbling experience unique to the area.

- A rainy day visit to the nearby D’atoga community.
- Charming D'atoga women with infectious smiles and impressive traditional adornments.
- The Hadza people live around Lake Eyasi in north-central Tanzania.
- Sharing fireside stories with some of the Hazda community.
