Another successful Vietnam home build by our visiting students from Cairo. Our etr staff commended the students on their determination and team work and the handover to the local recipients was very emotional indeed. Congratulations to our CAC team!

Earlier this week, our visiting students trekking in Nepal passed though hamlets where they joined in celebrations of the Hindu holiday of Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors. The festival signifies the end of winter and the start of spring as well as the triumph of good over evil and, getting into the spirit of the festival, the student's faces ended up smeared with bright colors. And they loved the trek!

After two days exploring the region, today our visiting students are literally digging in as they start their Cape Town service project at a community based agricultural initiative that provides organic produce to over 20 food kitchens, assisting vulnerable children, families and elderly throughout the area. Last week another group of industrious visiting students ventured with us to northern Vietnam and constructed a traditional house for a local family. The building location presented an added challenge, but the students just stepped up their game to ensure an on time completion. Their energy and enthusiasm carried on after the construction while they engaged in Vietnamese cooking, dancing, and exploring the capital Hanoi as well as Ha Long Bay. Bravo!

etr's signature house build service program is a game changer not only for our industrious students constructing a traditional stilt house, but for the recipient families. This photo is from 2011 when 18 students from a Hong Kong school applied their energy and enthusiasm to new found building skills and completed the home in record time. After the completion of the project, the students explored Hanoi and enjoyed well earned R+R with an overnight cruise on iconic Ha Long Bay.

Steering away from etr's usual Throw-back Thursday group shot, this is one celebrates the conclusion and shared accomplishment of these student's day long trek through rural hamlets in northern Vietnam, the afternoon of which was under steady rain. Though dirty, wet and tired, the students all agreed that they now had a fuller insight and appreciation of the working conditions of local rice farmers. But now it's time for hot showers and bowl of Phở Hà Nội.

Well, it’s Thursday, so time to step back to and take a look at a previous etr adventure. This time we highlight a most favourite student destination, Bali. Here you see an etr group from 2011 exploring Gunung Kawi Temple, located a short distance from Bali’s traditional art capital, Ubud. With its intricate carvings from the 11th century, Gunung Kawi is one of the oldest Hindu temples on the island and a great location for our visiting students to learn about Balinese Hindu practices and customs.

In our own version of Throwback Thursday we raid the etr image archives for this gem from 1994. It’s early morning, day three of a challenging student trek in the hills just south of the majestic Annapurna massif. If there was audio, you’d the unzipping of tents and the cooking crew calling everyone for warm chai and toast before breakfast. This trek is a wonderful cultural adventure. Come along!

Though our last group in Kathmandu was in October 2019, it may not be too long before we are back. Our service programs in the capital have been popular since our first Nepal learning adventure way back in 1994 and schools are looking to return in Spring 2023.

Memories on Monday! Today, we head back to winter 2007 with a group of high school students from Singapore which partook in a weeklong Moscow & St Petersburg program with us. Here we find the students posed in front of Catherine’s Palace, the summer residence of the czars from 1757 to the fall of the empire, right before the traditional snowball fight.

Despite cold snowy conditions or maybe because of them, etr Capitals of Russia learning adventures are most popular in the winter months, and have been for 30 years. Needless to say, we cannot wait to get back. (BTW: Today it is cloudy and -13°C in St Petersburg.)

For all our European based colleagues and friends searching a weekend destination, look towards Paris. There are museums galore in the French capital, but two highly popular temporary shows beg attention. The much-anticipated Botticelli exhibit explores the work of the Florentine master with 40 masterpieces on display (until 24 January). Also, images of renown Parisian photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson are on display at the Musée Carnavalet (until 31 October). To avoid crowds, etr director Greg Godar advises booking Botticelli for early in the day.

Bonus: Those heading to Paris over the next two weeks can also enjoy Cristo’s temporary installation at/of l'Arc de Triomphe (3 Oct). See photo below! Visitez Paris maintenant !

Last week presented a great opportunity for etr directors to return to Sicily and make time-efficient adjustments and enhancements to our long-standing, cross-curricular travel programs to the island. And this included visiting the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. One of the main highlights is the Temple of Concordia, as pictured here. Built around 440 BC, this is one of the best-preserved Doric temples in the world. Fantastic.

On a road trip to explore some of France’s smaller, yet culturally significant cities, one of etr’s directors posted this early Wednesday evening photo of Notre-Dame de Reims, one of Europe's most important Gothic structures.

Located in the heart of the city and a World Heritage site, the cathedral is over 150 meters long and its impressive towers rise above the rooftops of Reims to a height of 81 m. It is also adorned with 2,303 statues, most dating to its construction in the 13th century.

Though awed by its beauty, let us not forget that this majestic cathedral has played a central role in 800 years of French history as it was the location of twenty-five coronations, including the crowning of King Charles VII in 1429 in the presence of Joan of Arc. Magnificent.

Yesterday we received a request for a group to explore Greece with us in May 2022. Though the emphasis will be on ancient civilization, we are sure to include all the engaging cultural activities which make Greece one of our top 10 destinations.

One highlight of the group’s time in Athens will be to explore the Acropolis, and though the most iconic building on the Acropolis is the Parthenon, here we feature the Erechtheion, home to the cult of Athena Polias, ‘Athena the Protectress’, guardian of the city named in her honour and the most sacred building on the site. The photo depicts the south porch and details the elegant Caryatids, six larger than life sized female statues, in simple but flattering veils and sleeves, supporting the porch’s roof. Though knowledge about who these statues specifically represent has been lost over the 2’400 years since their construction, their beauty and charm remain mesmerizing.
