Lake Thun Cruising – light show on water

No memorable Wengen holiday is complete without a beautiful cruise on the Alpine Lake of Thun. Because the variety of experience is, unlike the lake itself, fathomless, we should perhaps enumerate. A cruise on Lake Thun can be of the hop on hop off variety, exploiting the water as a means of transport as in the pre-railway days of old. A cruise can also be a languorous journey from one end of the lake to the other and back, soaking up the sun and the Alpine scenery of the Jungfrau Region as we go. Or perhaps a nostalgic trip aboard the paddle steam ship, SS Blümlisalp, this is both educational and majestic in the extreme. A floating gourmet feast, fondue or breakfast cruise, are other appealing options and then we come to the SEASONS and the LIGHT.

Light Show on Water
To keep it simple – every school child knows our earth rotates around its own axis, moves around the sun, and the sun and moon appear to rise and set and do so in a different arc each day. So when and where we select to take our cruise on Lake Thun will determine our unique experience. A cruise in blowy, rainy weather can be an experience too, however the colours are stronger on a clear day. Winter and summer cruises are likewise, wholly different worlds.

Early Evening Sunlight
Casting off from Interlaken West at 5:10pm on a beautiful evening in mid-October, the sunlight is low and generously yellow, warm and casts long shadows. Our Lake Thun cruise is aboard the MS Berner Oberland and we shall zigzag across the lake visiting castles and harbours, finally disembarking at Thun and boarding the connecting train for our return to Wengen.

6:40pm- The technicolour light on the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains, on this particular day in October 2021, although fleeting, is truly remarkable. Not least because of giving a rosy feeling of wellbeing, like a fire on a winter’s evening.

Add a Splash of Silvery Moonlight
7:04pm- As we travelled in a north-westerly direction along the lake, the moon appeared to rise out of the Schreckhorn Mountain, as if by magic. It was an exciting moment around 6:25pm, just out of Faulensee!
Since then our Lake Thun cruise has taken us to Spiez, Gunten, Oberhofen and Hilterfinger; the illuminated Oberhofen Castle at the water’s edge being quite spectacular.
At this point our Lake Thun cruise is almost at an end, the image below may well stay with us for a lifetime!

Wengen Holiday Trips
Gimmelwald
An unspoilt hamlet just waiting to be explored on a late Wengen holiday.
Fallboden. Improve your fitness this autumn vacation by hiking up from Wengen to Fallbodensee and Eigergletscher. Views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau on a clear day will not disappoint.

Schynige Platte
The nostalgic Schynige Platte Railway operates quite late into October. Which is great for making the most of the golden autumn light on a Wengen vacation. The Alpine Garden is still of some interest and circular hikes might also appeal to you on this excursion from Wengen. The panoramic view of the wall of Bernese Alps is mesmerising from this vantage point too.

Grosse Scheidegg
Check out the mountain bus from Grindelwald station and bathe in the morning light at Grosse Scheidegg. Hiking around to First and Bachalpsee might be possible on this holiday.

Mürren and Winteregg
The cableway from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp is a great way to get on the scenic, relatively flat trail along the contour to Winteregg and Mürren. Wengen resort can be seen across the valley, bathed in evening sunshine, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains on the right hand side.

Wengen Holiday: Männlichen
Although the cableway closes quite early in autumn, it might be possible to hike up from Wengen on this holiday. Red foliage is abundant in September and is particularly enjoyable on the ‘Romantic Hike’ down to Alpiglen or Kleine Scheidegg.

There are several ways up from Wengen, enabling this destination to be an option for most of this holiday season.

Faulhorn Summit – A Route Less Travelled By Bussalp-Faulhorn-Bachalpsee-First Summer Season Hike

The Faulhorn summit at 2681m is a very worthwhile destination for the hiker. It’s a high spot with truly panoramic views and a real sense of the highlife. Schynige Platte to Faulhorn to First is a justly celebrated hike but for a route less travelled by you can access the top from Bussalp and enjoy the beauties of the Bachalpsee, before you, on the descent.

Bussalp to Faulhorn – getting to Bussalp from Wengen
An early start is recommended. Routes from Wengen to Grindelwald are several. By train via Zweilütschinen, or aerial cableway over the Männlichen to Terminal and bus/train to Grindelwald station, are the quickest options. From Grindelwald station, take the mountain bus to the terminus at Bussalp. This is an enjoyable 30 minute, scenic journey with a mountain restaurant at the terminus for refreshment before the ascent (pictured below).

Hiking to Faulhorn Summit
A suggested time for this uphill hike to the Faulhorn summit is 2 hours 45 minutes although the scenery is so enthralling you might want to pause for photos as every new vista unfolds. The Schreckhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains are evident from the start but as we climb, more and more of the snow-clad Alpine wall of summits comes into view.

At the Bussalp trail’s head, we join the more frequented trail for the diversion to the Faulhorn summit and for the descent via Bachalpsee to First Cableway.

Definitely a hump, an unusual shape perhaps for a summit. The prominence is 128m. high.On the top is the mountain restaurant, pictured here, it is open in the summer season. The photo below shows a section of the onward trail to Schynige Platte.

Descent from Faulhorn Summit
Alpine mountain streams flow into the Bachalpsee, hence the name. This mountain tarn is a gem of the Jungfrau Region.Enjoy a leisurely descent after the strenuous ascent, with the Wetterhorn towering ahead as you walk. A dip in the mountain lake, a drink at the First Mountain Restaurant, or a quick flight on the zip-wire are all fun ways to end the day. Please note the operating times of the First Grindelwald cableway.

Royal Walk on Männlichen – Crown Lookout Point
Take the Royal Walk on Männlichen from May to October and survey the majestic ‘kingdom’ of the Jungfrau Region from the crown summit. Just a 5-minute aerial cableway journey above Wengen and the Royal Walk begins from the top station. On a clear day, the climb of 120m over the 1km walk to the summit, is a breathtaking experience in more ways than one. But it’s all worth it to see the true panorama of lake and mountain.
A journey of instruction if you wish…
This photo, taken just before sunset in July (special sunset trips), shows a wealth of peaks and one of the ‘crown’ information posts which are dotted along the length of the Royal Walk. If you are interested in getting up to speed with your surroundings, then it’s a great opportunity, not least because it’s a chance to catch your breath.
The crowning glory is the summit…
At 2342m above sea level, the Royal Walk experience reaches its zenith at the gipfel or summit. You can certainly get a feel for the region here. And a mind map from which to plan excursions to Lake Thun, Schynige Platte, First and Bachalpsee, the Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen Valley and Schilthorn’s Piz Gloria revolving restaurant.
Special sunset trips in July and August…
Not to be missed are the special evening trips on good weather Tuesdays in July and August. After the barbecue at the Berghaus the Royal Walk is especially enticing if you wish to enjoy the full panorama. Or simply enjoy the Alpine views from the restaurant terrace with glass in hand!

Alpine Herdsman’s Playground
Imagine an Alpine playground offering the natural challenges once experienced by a young herdsman in the Alps. Within a mountain scape of snowy peaks and alpine meadow, Männlichen offers a challenging raft of rope bridges to cross to reach the ‘refuge’ of the Alpine hut. In addition, seesaws, swings and trampolines add to the fun. Of course the herds of cows summering on the alp come in normal cow size but the oversized cow made of wood and steel has an amazing interior, a viewing platform and even a slide.

Berghaus Refreshments
Parents of older children can relax on the terrace of the Alpine Berghaus and enjoy refreshments and sunshine whilst keeping a watchful eye on their youngsters at play.

Getting to the Alpine Playground
Männlichen playground is a short but stunning 5-6 minute aerial cableway ride from the centre of Wengen and a short romp over the alp. Take the cabin balcony option for spectacular instagram photos of yourselves gliding above the idyllic resort of Wengen and the spectacular Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Männlichen is a playground in more ways than one…
– Take a short but steep hike up to the crown for a truly panoramic view.
– Take the kids on the ‘Lieselotte Trail’.
– Hike down across stream and alp and through pine forest to Bustiglen and Alpiglen.
– Cross the Tschuggen mountainside with views of Eiger Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains, to Kleine Scheidegg.
– Identify Alpine flowers in season.
– Take the aerial cablecar to the Terminal, and then the Eiger Express to Eigergletscher and cogwheel railway back to Wengen for a scenic, effortless day in the Alps.

Finding Accommodation in Wengen

Airplane sky diving
Sky diving is one of the most popular bucket list adventures. Airplane skydiving is certainly one of the best ways to get up close to the Swiss Alps. An experience you will never forget!

Transport
Sky dive Switzerland offer a transport service to pick you up and drive you to and from the drop zone. There are several pickup points for you to choose from including Interlaken. Alternatively, you are welcome to drive to the drop zone.

The Drop Zone – Reichenbach
On your arrive at the Drop zone, you will be greeted by the amazing staff that work at Skydive Switzerland. They will look after you from the moment you arrive.

On the airplane
Your adventure will start with an approximately 15-minute scenic flight as the jump plane climbs to altitude. Enjoy the views of Interlaken’s two lakes and the incredible Swiss Alps, including the famous peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Time to go sky diving
Your flight is followed by a 45-second adrenaline-pumping freefall from the altitude of 4,000 m (13,000 ft). Feel the ground rushing towards you at 200 km/h (120 mph)!

Once the parachute is deployed, you can take a deep breath and enjoy the 5 – 7 minute canopy ride while you make your way safely back down to the ground.

Photographs and video
If you would like a memento of your sky dive your can book a photo and video package. If you book this additional service your instructor will have a camera attached to their wrist. You will receive amazing video footage and photos of the whole jump including the jump out of the airplane, your free fall, the canapé opening and your landing.
