Marketing and sales are merging. With pressure to prove their value, marketers are being asked to deliver new customers.
This has led to new event formats where vendors pay to exhibit, speak and sponsor, while customers get cheap access. This trend is driven by startups who must achieve scale quickly to secure funding, growth, floatation or acquisition.
At other events, sales teams are asking how they can have face-time with potential customers, or bring them into their sales cycle.
Techniques to do this include product demos, and hospitality areas where sales teams can spend 1-1 time with warm leads. Marketing must work with sales to make experiences as creative as they are effective. There’s room here for creative activations that deliver brand awareness as well as sales leads.

Qualtrics is a data company who have pioneered the collecting and application of emotional data.
They enabled client JetBlue to combined past experiences and user surveys to improve customer experiences in emergencies.
‘Experience data’ from customer surveys combined with traditional transactional data to allowed them to understand how people were going to react. For an airline, this predictive use of data meant putting in place measures that ensured customers stayed happy, even in the face of threats such as extreme weather.

The D-Rose Jump Store is an example of the 'Proximity' trend:
To reach their target audience of young men in London, Adidas brought the D Rose Jump Store to Hackney. The activation challenged sneakerheads to jump–basketball style – to snatch a pair of new trainers from a high shelf, under the guidance of NBA star Derrick Rose.
Promoting the activation on local radio stations, in takeaways, and on social media, they created buzz around the event. By staging it in a basketball court on a housing estate, they ensured maximum exposure to their target audience and a community that couldn’t ignore them.
