Did you know …

… a group of giraffe on the move is called a JOURNEY and group standing still is called a TOWER?

We captured this lovely Tower on a safari in prolific Chobe Game Park, Botswana, and a Journey in South Luangwa, Zambia.

Stuart took a flight with friend and partner in tourism - Mike Johnson - pilot, boatman, entrepreneur, owner of the fabulous Bayete Collection of B&Bs - over the Victoria Falls yesterday. We so appreciate - each and every day - that we have our offices within the sound of the mighty Zambezi plunging over the Victoria Falls into the dramatic Batoka Gorges over 100 m below. We can see the spray from the Stone Dynamics Gallery!

On Africa Day we celebrate by showing you one of the famous soapstone Zimbabwe Birds, found standing guard over Great Zimbabwe, once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the late Iron Age. The name Zimbabwe is derived from a Shona word 'Dzimba dza mabwe' meaning the ‘great houses of stone’.

Simply Africa revisited one of our favourite areas - the lesser known yet fabulous Gonarezhou National Park on the South Eastern border of Zimbabwe. We camped - just the two of us - under giant riverine trees in pristine private sites - the other side of luxury. Some days we stayed in camp and simply watched the elephants drift by, following ancient routes as they crossed the life giving Runde River which shimmered blue and silver under the towering sandstone Chilojo Cliffs. Lions roared at night, hyenas whooped and a leopard left its dinner in a tree next to camp. On other days we explored in our vehicle, marvelling at the ever changing scenery and habitats. Winding roads took us through rocky hills and river crossings, past pans and Baobabs. A recent and welcome rain shower created a fine sheen of brilliant green shoots over the dry earth of the flood plains. Curious giraffe and peering buffalo watched us as we watched them. Nyala, zebra and duiker delighted us. We ended our trip at luxurious Chilo Lodge - perched on the very edge of Chilo Gorge - truly ‘on the edge of serenity’. We can tell you so much more. Contact us and we can help you make your safari dreams come true, whether it be camping, self catering or luxury lodging.

Simply Africa recently visited Botswana’s expansive Nxai and Makgadikgadi Pans - two best kept safari secrets! We witnessed Africa’s second largest zebra migration right from serene Nxai Pan Lodge, and took game drives beside the beautiful Boteti River from characterful Meno a Kwena Lodge. The Boteti is "Chobe without the crowds" and Nxai Pan is the "Serengeti migration without the crowds".

We just visited in Hwange again – one of Zimbabwe’s Best Kept Secrets! This small self-catering camp offers 5-star facilities at a less than 1-star price. We saw elephant, leopard, hyena, zebra, kudu and buffalo from camp. At Masuma Dam - just 5km away - we saw hundreds of buffalo and elephant, as well as painted dog, lion, jackal, crocs, hippos, baboons, antelope, warthog and more.

We witness a wildebeest crossing in the Serengeti. Hundreds of wildebeest gather on the banks of the Mara, milling about before deciding to cross. Suddenly one leaps in and its on! Swirling dust as they descend, splashing water as they swim, and thundering hooves as they scramble out, lowing as separated mothers and young call for each other. Huge crocodiles lurk and attack. An emotional experience and not for the faint hearted! Our lovely tented camp Lemala Mara was was just 200m from the river and we saw seven crossing in two days

We just took a camping trip to Chobe Game Park, Botswana. Great campsite under shady gardenias with a sunset view onto elephants crossing the river, journeys of giraffe browsing, alternately sleeping and mating lions, beautiful scenery, being surrounded by 1000 buffalo at night – a wonderful trip! Thank you Rex Kelly, Kalahari Tours, for sturdy tents and comfortable bed rolls!

Simply Africa facilitated a generous donation from Frank Zindel, Lichtenstein, to the Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit (VFAPU) founded and ably led by Charles Brightman and Clever Kapandura. This unit works incredibly hard to protect the wildlife and trees in the beautiful Zambezi and Victoria Falls National Parks, through education, management and boots on the ground. We wonder what there would be for us to see without their efforts ….? Frank came out with members of his family to see VAPU’s work and meet the team. We were taken on an interesting walk, from Pioneers Camp on the Zambezi, and learnt from an eye opening presentation. Thank you Frank, Charles and the VFAPU Scouts! They need your help to keep going so take a look at their site and donate what you can! www.vfapu.com
